Job summary

Santa Maria Hostel is looking for a Maintenance Assistant/Porter to support building upkeep and day-to-day facility operations in Houston. You will perform basic repairs, assist with utilities, maintain grounds, and handle cleaning duties to keep classrooms, conference rooms, restrooms and common areas safe and orderly.

The role includes receiving deliveries, operating cleaning equipment, and assisting with events setup.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Vocational certificate preferred for this role.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic repairs and improvements as needed (i.e. painting, changing light bulbs, and basic plumbing) to buildings and furnishings.
• Assists Facilities Manager with building utility system maintenance and repairs (i.e. electrical wiring and controls, heating and ventilation systems and plumbing systems).
• Maintains property landscape (i.e. mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing weeds, disposing of leaves and refuse).
• Performs cleaning duties to ensure the environment is clean and safe. Duties include: cleaning classrooms, conference rooms, floors, restrooms, hallways and common areas; dusting, washing, pressure washing, and sanitizing other surface spaces in accordance with established procedures and guidelines and schedules.
• Receives deliveries, unpacks and stores supplies.
• Operates cleaning equipment and uses designated chemicals safely and in accordance with instructions.
• Collects and disposes of garbage and waste according to the organization's policies; disinfects cans and changes bags daily.
• Refills paper towels, tissue, toilet paper, and hand soap in all dispensers.
• Performs preventative maintenance and documentation such as changing air filters, monthly fire extinguisher checks, changing smoke detector batteries, etc.
• Informs Facilities Manager of issues or inventory shortages.
• Assists with setting up and breaking down furniture and equipment for meetings or events.
• Monitors building premises for safety hazards and reports concerns to Facilities Manager.
