Job summary

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a Facilities Planner & Designer to support space planning, furniture coordination and facility-related resource management. You will collaborate with architects, engineers and customers to drive project development and implementation across institutional spaces.

The Facilities Planner & Designer supports the evaluation and effective utilization of physical facilities, ensuring space, interiors, and planning resources are aligned with operational and strategic goals. The Facilities Planner & Designer plays a key role in project development, space planning, furniture coordination, and facility-related resource management.
Within this environment, the Facilities Planner & Designer collaborates with stakeholders, architects, engineers, project managers, and customers to support facility planning initiatives. The Facilities Planner & Designer contributes to the successful planning, design, implementation, and ongoing utilization of institutional spaces across UT MD Anderson.
Ideal candidate will have Architectural and medical planning experience at a healthcare design firm or planning experience in a hospital facilities department.
Salary Range: $88,000 - $110,000 - $132,000

Responsibilities

Programming and Planning
  • Develop facility space programs, conceptual floor plans, and Pre-Design reports in accordance with established standards.
  • Evaluate facility utilization and planning needs to support effective use of institutional space.
  • Define project scopes, preliminary budget estimates, and program descriptions for project development and implementation.
  • Obtain all necessary approvals related to planning and programming activities.
  • Pursue educational opportunities that support continued professional growth and development.
Customer Interaction

  • Serve as a key customer contact while working under general supervision.
  • Engage project stakeholders throughout planning and project activities.
  • Document meetings and maintain detailed meeting notes.
  • Communicate Facility Alteration Request (FAR) processes and project status updates to customers.
  • Consult with architects, project managers, engineers, and staff regarding building codes, policies, guidelines, and regulations.
Procurement, Installation & Standards

  • Participate in design and construction phases to ensure planning intent and standards are maintained throughout projects.
  • Support design standards creation, coordination, compliance, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Review drawings and submittals and assist with variance submissions.
  • Assist with the creation and refinement of standards programs under general supervision.
  • Manage project documentation, including reports, finish schedules, space reports, meeting minutes, file organization, and regulatory-related reporting.
  • Obtain all necessary approvals associated with project documentation and standards compliance.
Space Assignment & Utilization

  • Assist in the maintenance and validation of space assignment and utilization records.
  • Confirm occupancy data accuracy and maintain related records.
  • Conduct surveys and assessments to support space planning activities.
  • Support ongoing evaluation of facility utilization and occupancy trends.
Additional Duties

  • Support furniture and equipment planning, procurement, and installation activities.
  • Maintain furniture and equipment inventories, floor plans, budgets, requisitions, and schedules.
  • Coordinate moves and site deactivation activities with minimal supervision.
  • Conduct site inspections and develop punch lists.
  • Manage schedules, asset transfers, customer communications, and work orders related to moves and deactivations.
EDUCATION

  • Required: Associate's Degree Interior Design, Space Planning, Architecture, Science and/or Clinical discipline.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Interior Design, Space Planning, Architecture, Science and/or Clinical discipline.
Work Experience

  • Required: Four years In interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning, project management, research laboratory or clinical operations experience. or
  • Required: Two years In interior/architectural design, facilities/equipment planning, project management, research laboratory or clinical operations experience with Bachelor's degree.
