Job summary

University Hospital in the University Hospital | Facilities Administration department seeks a Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Tech to maintain and repair welded piping systems, boilers, steam and condensate lines, and related equipment.

Under supervision, the technician inspects, installs, fabricates, maintains, and troubleshoots piping systems, responds to emergencies, and may be placed on 24-hour call per operational needs.

Job Title: Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Tech

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Technician

Function Statement: Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment. Piping systems and equipment include, but are not limited to boilers, compressed gas systems, steam & condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Job Duties: Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.

Pipefitting and welding: (70%)

• Installs and repairs and maintains all welded piping systems and components.
• Reviewing blueprints and technical drawings, Installing, repairing and replacing piping and components.
• Measuring and cutting pipes using hand and power tools.
• Inspecting and identifying leaks.
• Installs, certifies, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment (e.g., meters, valves, piping).
• Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
• Performs preventive maintenance tasks.
• Performs equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving, and welded piping systems).
• Addressing customer queries.
• Cleaning the work area after work completion.

General Duties (30%):

Technical Support:

Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Inspects and tests installations and repairs to ensure they meet quality standards. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. May assist lower-level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams.

Communication / Record Keeping:

Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Submits material and equipment purchase requests (e.g., eRequests, eMaterials). Provides feedback on materials. Creates estimates for small projects. Inform customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.

Other Department Duties:

• Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc.
• Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations.
• Participates on emergency response teams.
• Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department.
• May participate on committees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
