Overview
Facilities Mechanical Steamfitter Technician role at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment, including boilers, compressed gas systems, steam and condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water.
- Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.
- Assists other trades as needed; adheres to safety practices; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates via written, electronic and verbal methods.
- Operates department vehicles and performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates in professional development and continuing education activities; obtains and maintains required certifications.
- Participates in emergency response teams and communicates with customers, coworkers and supervision.
- Shift, hours, and/or location may change based on operational need; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.
Major Work Characteristics
- Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as-built drawings.
- Follow applicable trade codes, standards and regulations; learn and apply safety standards; identify and apply risk controls.
- Use hand, power and machine tools; install and maintain piping systems; perform calculations and prepare measurements as needed.
- Plan and prioritize work; establish and maintain interpersonal relationships; keep a clean and safe work environment.
Qualifications
Minimum Classification Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent; two years’ experience in maintenance, pipefitting and/or welding or related equipment; proficient use of pipefitting and welding tools; basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.
- Knowledge of piping components (valves, fittings, types of piping).
- A valid driver’s license; successful completion of probationary period; valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
Desired Qualifications
- Associates/technical degree or vocational certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field.
- Boiler operator’s license (low/high pressure); valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
- AWS Certified Welder.
- Basic understanding of university building design standards related to maintenance and repair of building systems; understanding of project process as managed by FOD Design and Construction.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs; distinguish colors; climb and stand on ladders for extended periods.
Unusual Work Conditions
- May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments; may work in cramped spaces.
