Function Statement
Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of mechanical systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs all welded piping systems and equipment, including boilers, compressed gas systems, steam & condensate systems, air compressors, laboratory and industrial kitchen equipment, steam stations, heat exchangers, condenser water, condensate, chilled water and heating hot water. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.
Job Duties
Pipefitting and Welding (70%)
- Installs, repairs, and maintains all welded piping systems and components.
- Reviews blueprints and technical drawings to install, repair, and replace piping and components.
- Measuring and cutting pipes using hand and power tools.
- Inspects and identifies leaks.
- Certifies, repairs, replaces, and performs preventative maintenance on piping systems and equipment.
- Troubleshoots and resolves piping system issues such as pressure, temperature, and leaks.
- Performs preventive maintenance tasks and equipment installations (e.g., fans, pumps, heat exchangers, trapping stations, valving).
- Addresses customer queries and cleans the work area after completion.
General Duties (30%)
- Technical Support: Ensures compliance with applicable codes, documents regulatory compliance tests, inspects and tests installations, becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities, assists lower-level technicians, locates, identifies, disables, and enables local utility shut-offs, updates building drawings, participates on emergency response teams.
- Communication / Record Keeping: Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders, submits material and equipment purchase requests, provides feedback on materials, creates estimates for small projects, informs customers when tasks are completed, initiates work order escalation if needed.
- Other Department Duties: Participates in professional development and continuing education activities, obtains and maintains required certifications, participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations, interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department, may participate on committees, performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Classification Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years experience in maintenance, pipefitting, and/or welding trade.
- Efficient skills and knowledge in using pipefitting and welding tools and equipment.
- A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance.
- Knowledge of piping components (types of valves, fittings, piping).
- A valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of probationary period.
- Valid OSHA 10‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
Desired Qualifications
- Associate or technical degree or vocational certificate in a skilled trade or maintenance related field.
- Boiler operator’s license (low or high pressure).
- Valid AWS Certified Welder certificate (desired).
- Basic understanding of university building design standards and project processes managed by FOD Design and Construction.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs, distinguish colors, climb and stand on ladders for extended periods.
Unusual Work Conditions
May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time; may work in cramped spaces.
