Job description

Facilities Mechanical Plumbing Technician

Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed plumbing systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, rigs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs plumbing systems and equipment. Threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed plumbing systems and equipment include, but are not limited to compressed gas systems, backflow preventers, sump pumps, drain, waste and vent systems, specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, de-ionized water, reverse osmosis), domestic water systems and plumbing fixtures, heating hot water systems, and chilled water systems. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects.

Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Job Duties

Incumbents may perform some or all of these duties and other job-related duties as required.

Plumbing (70%)
  • Reviewing blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Installing, repairing and replacing threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed piping and components.
  • Measuring and cutting pipes using hand and power tools.
  • Inspecting and identifying leaks.
  • Installing and repairing domestic water systems.
  • Installing and repairing drain, vent and waste systems.
  • Installing and repairing specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, deionized water, reverse osmosis).
  • Installing, certifying, repairing and performing preventative maintenance on backflow preventers.
  • Installing and replacing plumbing equipment and fixtures (e.g., meters, valves, toilets).
  • Assembling and disassembling plumbing fixtures.
  • Repairing compressed gas systems.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving plumbing system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks).
  • Performing plumbing and pipe fitting PMs.
  • Addressing customer queries.
  • Cleaning the work area after completion.
General Duties (30%)
Technical Support
  • Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Documents regulatory compliance tests.
  • Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves field problems.
  • Assists lower-level technicians.
  • Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs.
  • Updates building drawings.
  • Participates on emergency response teams.
Communication / Record Keeping
  • Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders.
  • Requests equipment and materials required to complete tasks.
  • Informs customers when tasks are completed.
  • Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed.
  • Updates building drawings.
Other Department Duties
  • Participates in professional development / continuing education activities, including obtaining and maintaining required certifications.
  • Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Participates on emergency response teams.
  • Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department.
  • May participate on committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Classification Requirements

High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years’ experience in the plumbing, trade and related equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; obtain the following during probationary period: valid OSHA 10‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card; EPA Section 608 Technician Certification - Universal. Efficient skills and knowledge in using plumbing tools and equipment. A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance. Knowledge of plumbing fixtures (i.e., faucets, toilets, hot water tanks, etc.) as well as piping components (i.e., types of valves, fittings, types of piping). A valid driver’s license. Successful completion of probationary period.

Desired Qualifications
  • Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field.
  • Valid OSHA 10‑hour General Industry Safety and Health card.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors.
  • Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time.
Unusual Work Conditions
  • May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time.
  • May work in cramped spaces.
Final candidates are subject to successful completion of a background check. A drug screen or physical may be required during the post offer process.
