Job description

Job Purpose

The purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced craft-mechanical plumbing work in various installation, repair, maintenance and service tasks for the College.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, services, and/or repairs plumbing fixtures and apparatus (i.e., water coolers, lavatory and kitchen fixtures and systems, water and wastewater lines, lift stations and treatment plants, portable classroom hook‑ups, and new construction).
  • Maintains piping systems by opening clogged drains, repairing valves and replacing washers on leaky faucets.
  • Reads plumbing directions on blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Repair, replace, and check high/low pressure steam boilers, safety devices, and controls.
  • Flush and clean boilers, storage and return tanks, and hot water heaters.
  • Services or replaces components including, but not limited to, valves, switches, pumps, traps, hose bibs, backflow devices, screens, and lines.
  • Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding plumbing installation, service, and repair activities.
  • Receives work orders, prioritizes assignments, and coordinates equipment, tools, materials, and supplies required per job site.
  • Works collaboratively and confers with contractor service providers, as applicable to assigned work orders.
  • Fills out and maintains work orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs, and maintenance records concerning assigned service vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs necessary calculations in preparing materials and work sites for installation, maintenance or repair, i.e., pipe dimensions, line layout, ditch and line grading, angles and distances.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per work site; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
  • Coordinates assigned work orders in a manner to minimize disruption in routine college activities, to include planning complex and long‑term projects during non‑operating hours and vacation schedules.
  • Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent flooding or other hazardous conditions. Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate. With the support of the College, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.
  • Repairs electrical switches, ballasts, receptacles, fixtures, timers, photocells, circuit breakers and miscellaneous wiring malfunctions; replaces light bulbs.
  • Performs various carpentry work including forming doors, windows, installation of cabinets, Formica work and concrete work.
  • Repairs roofs, flashing, downspouts, roof drains, exhaust fans, vents and coats roofs with roof coating.
  • Assists co‑workers by performing tasks such as preparation of job site or surfaces, carrying tools and equipment, and assisting with needed repairs.
  • Moves and relocates furniture, equipment and other items pursuant to requests initiated.
  • Performs safety inspections on emergency devices.
  • Cleans and performs scheduled maintenance on A/C units, including installing filters, replacing exhaust fans when necessary.
  • Tags out and locks out equipment.
  • This position may be required to work on campus while it is closed due to various emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Completion of an approved apprenticeship program for multiple trades; or a high school diploma and four years of experience in general repairs and maintenance. Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. High school diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum five (5) years progressively skilled and knowledgeable commercial and/or industrial experience in craft mechanical plumbing trades work, and demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, and project specifications; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license.
