This position will serve as the primary knowledge base and will be required to design, evaluate, and troubleshoot Heating, Air Conditioning, and Ventilation systems for the University, including ground source heat pump systems. This position provides a full range of mechanical design services for in-house projects involving simple repairs, replacements, and/or renovation. Responsibilities include HVAC, piping, fire sprinkler, and plumbing design reviews as needed, as well as preparing cost estimates for mechanical aspects of planned projects. The employee will be heavily involved in the UNC Asheville Energy Conservation Program.
The role also involves serving as Project Manager, overseeing the design and construction of major capital projects and smaller repair and renovation projects, managing all aspects of projects ranging from $1K to $40MM.
This position must be licensed and will serve as one of two Capital Projects Coordinators, coordinating with the State Construction Office. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining information in InterScope, reviewing, negotiating, and approving Design Letter Agreements, and coordinating schedule reviews with UNC General Administration using Primavera.
Additionally, the role includes serving as the system administrator for the building automation system, supporting the system operator, managing integration of control and monitoring of lighting, renewable energy, and electrical power systems. The position will serve as the University Energy Manager, review and approve utility bills, and manage the electronic drawing archive (“S Drive” Drawing Manager).
A Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline related to the area of assignment or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.
The preferred candidate will have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and hold a North Carolina Professional Engineer’s License. Candidates with a license in another state with reciprocity and the ability to obtain a North Carolina license within 6 months of hire will also be considered.
Practical experience of 4-6 years in mechanical project engineering and 10-12 years in construction/design engineering is preferred. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of experience with the operation and programming of building automation systems, preferably with Automated Logic Corporation controls, is desired. Experience with building access control and camera security systems, such as Avigilon, is also preferred. Certifications such as LEED AP and CEM are highly desirable.
