The Regents of the University of California on behalf of their Los Angeles Campus is seeking a Facilities Mechanic to perform routine and semi-skilled plumbing tasks on campus buildings and related facilities. You will operate a sewer jetter to clean sewer and storm drains and assist journeymen plumbers in a range of maintenance activities.

Candidates should have strong plumbing knowledge, the ability to read blueprints, and be able to work both indoors and outdoors under varied conditions.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge of plumbing trade to assist journeymen plumbers.
  • Reading blueprints and understanding work orders required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend English and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with others and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends.
  • Able to stand, crawl, walk, reach and lift up to 50 lbs.

Job description

Position Summary

Perform routine and semi-skilled tasks related to the plumbing trade in the maintenance, alteration and repair of building systems and related facilities equipment. Under the general direction of a journey-level craftsperson, Lead Plumber, or the direct supervision of the Plumbing Supervisor, or Sr. Superintendent, independently or as part of a crew, run the sewer jet to machine clean sewer and storm drains, clean out sediment traps in waste system, and appropriately use and maintain sewer jet equipment. Install and maintain piping systems and fixtures as instructed. Perform various other routine or semi-skilled duties related to construction trades including those tasks normally performed by a Facilities Worker.

Qualifications
  • General knowledge of plumbing trade sufficient to provide routine assistance to journeymen Plumbers and working knowledge of various tools, equipment and supplies of the Plumber's trade (Required)
  • Ability to operate a sewer jetter following established procedures and safety practices (Required)
  • Ability to read and comprehend English text required to comprehend work orders, reports, operating instructions clearly and accurately. Oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers, staff and departmental staff (Required)
  • Ability to read blueprints (Required)
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team (Required)
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction (Required)
  • Ability to work under adverse situations and conditions, e.g. dirty, noisy, etc. Ability to work indoors and outdoors, in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures (Required)
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends (Required)
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk, and stoop, push, pull and lift or lower objects weighing up to 50 lbs, heavier with assistance (Required)
  • Working knowledge of standard safe work practices (Required)
  • Ability to make minor repairs, replacements, or installations using a variety of trade skills and equipment/tools (Preferred)
  • Ability to operate a drain line video camera and a pipe depth locator and certified in the abatement of hazardous materials including asbestos, lead, and mold highly preferred (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
