Job summary

University of California, Los Angeles is seeking a Facilities Mechanic with HVAC emphasis to support campus buildings and infrastructure. You will perform routine and semi-skilled tasks, assist journeypersons, and help install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems at RRUMC and other UCLA facilities.

Under supervision, you will operate a range of hand and power tools, maintain logs, and follow safety practices while contributing to reliable climate control and environmental comfort across campus.

Qualifications

  • General knowledge, practice and procedures of HVAC trade sufficient to provide routine assistance to journeypersons.
  • Ability to: perform routine and semi-skilled tasks assisting Service Engineers and Steam Operating Engineers; make minor repairs/installations, or perform preventive maintenance on a variety of University equipment/systems; make minor repairs, replacements, or installations using a variety of trade skills and equipment/tools; provide direction to Facilities Workers.
  • Working knowledge of: various hand tools, power equipment and supplies of the HVAC trade; standard safe work practices, equipment, and methods.
  • Skill in: basic mathematical calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing 4-digit numbers and fractions); reading standard English text to understand work orders and reports; writing standard English for reports.
  • Ability to: stand, crawl, walk and stoop; lift up to 50 lbs; work indoors/outdoors in varying conditions; adapt to shifts.
  • Skill in: working independently or as part of a crew; following through with minimal direction.
  • Ability to: establish cooperative relationships; communicate effectively with staff.
  • Ability to: observe safety practices; read blueprints and technical manuals; operate in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and semi-skilled tasks related to the HVAC trade independently or as part of a crew, including alterations and repairs and assisting journeypersons with installation and maintenance of HVAC equipment.
  • Assist in the repair of steam lines and vacuum pumps.
  • Operate tools and equipment related to the HVAC trade.
  • Maintain logs of completed tasks and transport materials; keep job sites clean and safe.
  • Perform other routine or semi-skilled duties related to construction trades typical of a Facilities Worker.

Position Summary

Under the direction of a journey-level crafts person, Hospital Zone (HK) managers and or HK superintendent perform all assigned work in Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRUMC), Center for Health Sciences Complex (CHS), Peter Morton Building (200 Medical Plaza), 300 Medical Plaza, Tiverton Guest House, Wasserman Building, and the West Medical Building. Perform routine and semi-skilled tasks related to the HVAC trade independently or as part of a crew, such as, alterations and repair of equipment and/or assist journeypersons with installation and preventive maintenance of HVAC equipment, compressors, and auxiliary equipment used in the manufacture and distribution of steam, chilled water, compressed air and distilled water. Assist in the repair of steam lines and vacuum pumps. Operate tools and equipment related to the HVAC trade. Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools, transport materials, clean job sites, and observe good safety practices are observed on the job site and that tools and equipment are used with caution. Maintain logs of completed tasks. Perform various other routine or semi-skilled duties related to construction trades including those tasks normally performed by a Facilities Worker.

(Required)

  • Ability to: stand, crawl, walk and stoop; push, pull and lift or lower objects weighing up to 50 lbs; work indoors and outdoors, in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures; work under adverse situations. (Required)

  • Skill in: working independently or as part of a work crew; following through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)

  • Ability to: establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, clients, supervisors, managers, vendors, outside agencies, and other entities; use oral communication skills to communicate diplomatically and effectively with co-workers, staff and departmental staff. (Required)

  • Ability to: observe all safety practices; work in confined spaces wearing full protective respirator equipment; read blueprints, project specifications, and technical trade related manuals. (Required)

  • Ability to: adhere to department policies and procedures; work overtime and weekends and ability to work various shifts; prioritize assignments and complete projects in a timely manner; consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations


  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
