Job summary

Furman University is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a range of mechanical and electrical equipment and building components. The role requires hands-on skills with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks.

Responsibilities include routine maintenance, safety adherence, and collaboration with the PM Shop Supervisor. Ability to work 24-7 on-call as needed is expected. This is a full-time, on-site position at Furman University.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing training; certifications a plus.
• D.H.E.C. Backflow prevention certification a plus.

Responsibilities

• Performs PM, routine maintenance and repairs on HVAC systems including VAV boxes, AHU, package units, and DX units; uses tools such as multi-meters and torque wrenches.
• Performs PM and routine electrical repairs on lighting and electrical systems; replaces bulbs, ballasts, switches, and plugs; may use meters and power usage meters.
• Performs PM and routine plumbing repairs on fixtures such as fountains, ice machines, sinks, toilets, and pumps; handles valves and equipment.
• Performs PM on carpentry tasks and general maintenance like tightening hardware and repairing ceiling tiles; may spot paint repairs.
• Tests and repairs backflow prevention devices per DHEC and Greenville Water Systems; requires confined space training.
• Washes campus directional signs.
• Performs PM and maintenance on decorative fountains and ponds; replaces heads, pumps, piping and valves.
• Reads and records chargeable utility meters.
• Performs PM, repairs and routine maintenance on campus gates including programming.
• Inspects fire sprinkler control valves and transformers quarterly.
• Maintains air compressors used for fire sprinkler systems.
• Follows safety, HR requirements and department policies.
• Works with Asset Essentials and Work Day on work orders, accounting and HR.
• Performs minor repairs on kitchen equipment.
• Trains and supervises temporary staff and students.
• Completes performance reviews with supervisor to align with department goals.
• Communicates openly and acknowledges co-workers' contributions.
• Pursues professional development to stay current.
