Job summary

Saint Mary's College is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to troubleshoot, install, inspect, operate, maintain, and repair mechanical systems across campus infrastructure. You will support electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, and emergency generator equipment while coordinating with other trades.

Job description

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, installing, inspecting, operating, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and equipment in support of the College's facilities and maintenance operations. This position works across multiple trades and provides support for mechanical equipment, plumbing, electrical systems, fire alarm and suppression systems, emergency generating equipment, and other campus infrastructure.

The Maintenance Mechanic works collaboratively with other members of the maintenance team to identify and resolve equipment issues, perform preventive maintenance, maintain accurate records, and ensure work areas and mechanical spaces are safe, clean, and organized. The position requires sound judgment, problem-solving skills, technical knowledge, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a cross-functional team.

The Maintenance Mechanic works under the direct supervision of the Director of Maintenance and may direct the work of assigned helpers or student employees as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related maintenance or mechanical work experience.

  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment and systems.

  • Ability to safely use tools, equipment, and appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a college, university, institutional, commercial, or similar facilities environment.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), preferably SchoolDude.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs.
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide assistance and technical guidance to fellow employees.
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, service manuals, and technical documentation.
Job Responsibilities
  • Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance as directed or required.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical devices and equipment, including pumps, engines, motors, conveyor systems, and related equipment.
  • Observe equipment in operation and use sound, visual, and other diagnostic methods to identify malfunctions.
  • Dismantle equipment to access defective components, replace or repair parts, and reassemble equipment for proper operation.
  • Lubricate, clean, adjust, and maintain mechanical equipment and components.
  • Install, adjust, and maintain equipment and functional components to ensure proper operation.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on emergency generating equipment, electrical control systems, fire alarm systems, lighting, construction-related equipment, and plumbing fixtures and equipment.
  • Perform basic plumbing repairs within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Conduct routine rounds of mechanical rooms and other assigned areas to identify maintenance needs, including lighting, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and other facility concerns.
  • Support other maintenance trades with repair, installation, and maintenance activities as needed.
  • Report significant equipment problems or repairs requiring additional expertise or resources to the Director of Maintenance.
  • Plan and maintain an inventory of parts, supplies, and materials required for assigned maintenance and repair responsibilities.
  • Estimate quantities and costs of materials needed to complete assigned work.
  • Maintain service manuals, maintenance logs, records, blueprints, schematics, and other technical documentation.
  • Perform assigned preventive maintenance activities.
  • Utilize the College's CMMS, SchoolDude, to receive, document, update, and complete assigned work orders.
  • Follow established procedures for ordering materials and supplies.
  • Utilize computers to prepare reports and documentation as directed by the Director of Maintenance.
  • Maintain work areas, shops, tools, workstations, and mechanical spaces in a safe, clean, and organized manner.
  • Follow established safety procedures and use all required personal protective equipment.
  • Assist and provide technical guidance to fellow maintenance staff in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Serve as a resource and instructor to other staff members when appropriate.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional maintenance team and perform duties outside the traditional scope of the Maintenance Mechanic position when operational needs require.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable governing and regulatory requirements within areas of responsibility.
  • May direct the work of assigned helpers or student employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Schedule

Full-time, 12-month position.

This position may require working evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency call-ins, and other hours as necessary to support the College's facilities and operations.

The position requires the ability to walk, crawl, climb stairs and ladders, stoop, bend, and lift for extended periods. The employee must be able to work in confined areas, operate vehicles, and lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
