Job summary

Sierra Nevada Journeys is seeking a dependable Facilities Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance and upkeep of our Outdoor Education Camp in Portola, CA. This full-time role reports to the Facilities & Land Director and includes basic carpentry, repairs, groundskeeping, and equipment upkeep to keep facilities safe and operational.

The successful candidate will have hands-on maintenance experience, enjoy outdoor work, and a willingness to learn new skills.

Qualifications

JOB DESCRIPTION

Sierra Nevada Journeys is seeking a dependable and hands-on Facilities Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance and upkeep of our Outdoor Education Camp. This is a full-time position with opportunities for professional growth and advancement.

Under the supervision of the Facilities & Land Director, the Facilities Maintenance Technician performs semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and groundskeeping work in accordance with organizational policies, safety standards, and applicable regulations. Responsibilities include basic carpentry, general repairs, lawn and grounds care, snow removal, leaf blowing, equipment maintenance, and other tasks necessary to keep camp facilities safe, clean, and operational.

The successful candidate will have experience or demonstrated ability in general facility maintenance and a willingness to learn new skills. This position will assist with the care and maintenance of camp buildings, grounds, equipment, vehicles, and facility systems while supporting the daily operations of a busy residential outdoor education camp.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Conduct routine inspections of camp buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and potential problems.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance and repairs to keep camp facilities, equipment, and systems safe, clean, functional, and ready for use.
• Complete daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance checklists and work orders for buildings, equipment, vehicles, and camp infrastructure.
• Perform general repairs and maintenance, including basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, drywall, doors, windows, fixtures, appliances, and hardware.
• Use common hand and power tools safely and appropriately to complete maintenance and repair projects.
• Respond to maintenance requests and prioritize repairs based on safety, urgency, operational needs, and available resources.
• Inspect buildings, grounds, and program areas for unsafe conditions; correct hazards when possible and promptly report issues requiring additional expertise or resources.
• Maintain accurate records of completed repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, and equipment servicing.
• Communicate regularly with the Facilities Director regarding maintenance needs, ongoing projects, equipment concerns, and facility conditions.
• Assist with maintaining camp swimming pool facilities, including routine cleaning, chemical monitoring and balancing, filter maintenance, and upkeep of restrooms, showers, and surrounding areas.
• Assist with the inspection, cleaning, servicing, and routine maintenance of camp vehicles, trailers, tools, and maintenance equipment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff, contractors, vendors, visitors, and program participants.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow organizational policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
• Ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, and working on uneven terrain.
• Ability to identify, assess, and respond appropriately to problems, hazards, and emergencies across all aspects of camp operations.
• Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background check.
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, functional, and welcoming camp environment.
• Experience using common hand and power tools and safely operating maintenance and grounds equipment.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call or emergency response, as required by camp operations. During peak summer operations, willingness and availability to work a Sunday–Thursday schedule is required.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with programming, operations, and administrative staff.
• All employees and volunteers are required to attest in writing that they have up-to-date immunizations against diseases required for public school attendance in the state in which they work.

COMPENSATION

• Starting pay: $21–$26 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance, with Sierra Nevada Journeys covering 90% of employee premiums and 30% of dependent premiums.
