Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Facilities Management Director, this position supports Facilities Management in ensuring equipment, facilities, grounds, and Jail are maintained, operational, and safe for public use. The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs maintenance and operates geothermal system boilers, HVAC/R systems, miscellaneous repairs, grounds keeping services (i.e., snow removal and grounds cleaning), and responds to emergency situations. Also provides custodial services and mail delivery. Assists other maintenance engineers and keeps the Director of Facilities apprised of work performed by contractors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates, monitors, maintains, and repairs HVAC/R systems, including air handling units, heat pumps, energy recovery systems, coils, and related components to ensure efficient operation.
- Operates and maintains boiler systems, including testing water chemistry, monitoring gauges, performing blowdowns, maintaining safety equipment, inspecting components, and preparing systems for seasonal startup and inspections.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs to building systems, fixtures, doors, windows, hardware, furniture, and equipment. Complete assigned work orders and order necessary parts and materials.
- Assists with facility modifications, including moving furniture and equipment and supporting remodeling activities. Works with electronic door systems and lighting controls.
- Performs groundskeeping duties, including snow and ice removal, vegetation trimming, litter removal, minor asphalt repair, and installation/repair of signage.
- Coordinates with and monitors contractors to ensure work is completed according to specifications and standards.
- Responds to facility-related emergencies on a rotating on-call basis and reports to work within required response times, 30 minutes or less.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides custodial and mail delivery services.
- Assists in training and orienting staff in building systems, safety procedures, and work practices.
- Maintains required licenses, certifications, and professional credentials.
- Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with employees and departments from other counties and states for collaboration.
- Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma/GED; and
- A minimum of three (3)years of experience working in facilities maintenance or related work
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with boilers, HVAC/R systems, geothermal systems, or building automation systems.
- Possession of a Second Class “C” Engineer License.
- Associate’s degree or certificate in HVAC, energy management, building systems, or a related field.
- Experience in performing building repairs and groundskeeping services.
- Proficient in understanding and speaking languages other than English, such as Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Sudanese, and Arabic, among others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must successfully pass a background check including fingerprinting.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive in the State of Minnesota, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel to various county and community locations.
- Must comply with all federal and state laws and organizational and departmental policies and regulations.
- Must obtain a Special Class Engineer Boiler License and Second Class “C” Engineer License within 18 months of hire.
- Must be able to report to work within 30 minutes of notification.
- Must be able to be on the rotating on-call schedule for nights and weekends.
- Must adhere to data practices policies and standards regarding non-public data. Access to non-public data must be limited to what is necessary to perform job duties. Employees must take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access and ensure secure storage of data in accordance with county policies and Minnesota Statutes.
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Night, weekend, holiday, and overtime hours may be necessary to meet departmental needs, special projects, and service needs and demands of the community served. Work schedules are subject to change based on operational needs.
This position requires participation in an on-call rotation, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays to respond to urgent needs.
