Job summary

Louisville Metro Government in Louisville, KY seeks a Custodial and Grounds Supervisor to oversee custodial, grounds maintenance and related labor activities. You will develop work plans, assign staff, and monitor performance, ensuring efficient operations and safety compliance.

This role requires strong leadership, hands-on oversight, and the ability to coordinate with building tenants and contractors. Applicants should have a high school diploma and at least three years of relevant experience

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of cleaning office buildings and restrooms; vac­uuming, shampooing, waxing and polishing floors; or grounds maintenance; operating mowing and related equipment, and hand-held landscaping tools experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Enforces safety procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and employee safety.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders parts, supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Discusses work assignments and problems with custodial contractors, building tenants and departments.
  • Coordinates the moving of equipment, supplies and furniture for meetings, seminars, press conferences and preparations for special events or seasonal activities.
  • Conducts on-site inspections to review and inspect the progress or completion of custodial and grounds maintenance tasks, and to investigate and resolve complaints from building tenants.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning custodial, grounds maintenance, and general labor tasks.

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to supervise the custodial, grounds maintenance and general labor operations and activities.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions

  • Mixes cleaning chemicals and prepares solutions in compliance with OSHA standards and guidelines.
  • Contacts vendors to order supplies and to obtain cost estimates for services.
  • Coordinates property maintenance and custodial operations with departmental personnel and contractors.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of cleaning office buildings and restrooms; vacuuming, shampooing, waxing and polishing floors; or grounds maintenance; operating mowing and related equipment, and hand-held landscaping tools experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Other Minimum Requirements
  • Must provide one's own source of transportation.
  • Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
  • Must be on 24-hour call.
  • Must work a varied schedule.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
  • Must complete the annual security awareness training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
