Job summary

The Facilities Assistant at the Chicago Botanic Garden supports Windy City Harvest in Chicago, IL, focusing on maintaining greenhouses and farm sites to ensure healthy plants and efficient operations.

You will assist with upkeep of facilities, equipment, and growing systems, collaborating with staff to keep daily operations safe and productive. A valid driver’s license and hands-on maintenance experience are required.

Qualifications

• At least two years of experience in general maintenance, facilities, farm operations, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience with hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, and small machinery.
• Experience with greenhouses, hoophouses, irrigation systems, or similar agricultural structures preferred.
• Basic plumbing and water system knowledge (PVC and tubing).

Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections of buildings, greenhouses, hoophouses, irrigation systems, and farm structures.
• Identify and address safety hazards, leaks, structural concerns, and equipment issues; report needs.
• Complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical repairs.
• Maintain walkways, storage spaces, landscaping, and site appearance.
• Support waste management, seasonal cleanup, and general site upkeep.
• Inspect and maintain hand tools, power tools, and small machinery; report unsafe equipment.
• Coordinate with Facilities Manager and site staff to schedule maintenance.
• Follow safety procedures including PPE and lockout/tagout; report unsafe conditions.
