Job summary

West Virginia is seeking a journey-level HVAC technician to maintain and repair heating, cooling, and related equipment across public buildings in Martinsburg. You will diagnose issues using meters such as OHM, volt, and amp meters, and order replacement parts as needed.

A valid driver's license is required; some shifts may involve call-back work or environmental duties (EPA refrigerant certification may be required for certain postings).

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED or four-year apprenticeship or two-year post-secondary technical school.
• Experience in heating, cooling, ventilation or related mechanical trades preferred.
• Substitution: related experience may substitute for training requirements.
• Special requirement: EPA certification for refrigerant recycling may be required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair HVAC equipment across public buildings.
• Use meters (OHM, volt, AMP) and other instruments to diagnose issues.
• Calculate and order materials needed for repairs.
• May be required to work in asbestos or other environmental issues with proper training.

Job description

These position work under general supervision, performs experienced journey level work maintaining and repairing a variety of equipment used in heating, cooling and general operation of public buildings. Uses OHM meters, volt meters, AMP meters, thermometers, hydrometers, conductivity meters, light meters, sound meters, dial indicators, micrometers, and calipers. Calculates and orders material. May be required, with proper training, to work in asbestos or other environmental issues. Must have a valid driver's license. Shift work and call-back work may be required. Performs related work as required.

• -In accordance with SPB 3088 effective 10/7/23, $5,000 will be added to the minimum starting rate of pay for all classifications within a Critical Vacancy Pay Supplemental Facility. Critical Vacancy Pay Facilities: Huttonsville Correctional Center and Jail, Mount Olive Correctional Complex and Jail, Western Regional Jail and Corrections Facility, Northern Correctional Facility (including Ohio County Correctional Center) Northern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, Chick Buckbee Juvenile Center, Vicki Douglas Juvenile Center, Potomac Highlands Regional Jail and Correctional Facility, and Eastern Regional Jail and Corrections Facility (including Martinsburg Correctional Center) (SPB3088)
• -Employees in this classification shall receive an annual base building pay differential each fiscal year of $250 after completing one year of service.
• -If an employee is hired into a Critical Vacancy Pay Facility (CVPF) and leaves the facility, the additional pay differential of $5,000 shall be removed from their salary, unless transferring to another CVPF.

Training:

Graduation from a standard four-year high school or GED or four-year apprenticeship program or two-year post-secondary technical school.

Substitution:

Experience in air-conditioning, heating or refrigeration may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:

Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in heating, cooling, ventilation or the mechanical or building trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plasterer, painter, welder, machinist, mechanic or masonry work.

Special Requirement:

Specific positions may require certification from a federal EPA approved testing organization as a certified technician required by the clean Air Act on refrigerant recycling.
