Job summary

Fairfax County Public Schools is seeking a custodian to clean, maintain, and secure FCPS-owned buildings. Tasks include floor care, window washing, dusting, trash removal, and basic repairs as assigned.

The role requires knowledge of custodial methods, ability to follow instructions, and safe work practices. Physical duties include lifting and moving supplies, with potential evening or night shifts and a 260-day contract.

Qualifications

• Education, training, and experience equivalent to completion of the sixth grade.
• May require evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis.
• Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, procedures, and cleaning materials.
• Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to learn the appropriate use of cleaning products.
• Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Responsibilities

• Performs repetitive, heavy, manual work requiring basic cleaning and maintenance.
• Mops wet and dry floors; strips wax and rewaxes; operates buffing machine.
• Washes windows, fixtures, floors, and walls; dusts furnishings.
• Empties trash and recycling; checks door locks and window latches.
• Raises and lowers the flag; replaces light bulbs; delivers packages.
• Transports heavy items; moves furniture and supplies manually or with assistance.
• Maintains building exterior, snow/ice removal, lawn care and debris cleanup.
• Performs related duties as required.
