Job summary

Via-Centers-For-Neurodevelopment is seeking a Facilities Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities include cleaning classrooms and common areas, setting up furniture for meetings and events, and responding to spills and safety concerns while following PPE guidelines.

The role supports campus operations with routine maintenance, equipment handling, and timely communication with supervisors regarding repairs and supplies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment safely.

Responsibilities

Description

The Facilities Custodian is responsible for maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and the public. The Facilities Custodian is also responsible for providing equipment and furniture for reserved meetings, classroom activities and events, as well as minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.

Duties and Responsibilities
Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and other assigned interior and exterior spaces to maintain a clean, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces, fixtures, furnishings, equipment, floors, windows, and other areas using appropriate cleaning products, equipment, and procedures.
  • Empty trash and recycling, replenish restroom and facility supplies, and maintain custodial and storage areas in an orderly and sanitary condition.
  • Respond promptly to spills, bodily fluids, and other cleaning or sanitation concerns using appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment.
  • Perform periodic deep cleaning and seasonal cleaning projects, including preparation for special events and the start of the school year.
Facilities & Maintenance
  • Monitor and inspect facilities for cleanliness, safety, damage, and maintenance needs; address minor concerns within the scope of the position and report larger repair needs appropriately.
  • Perform routine minor maintenance and repairs to facilities, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Maintain custodial equipment and supplies and communicate replacement, repair, or purchasing needs as appropriate.
Facility Setup & Operations
  • Prepare, open, and secure facilities in accordance with established procedures to ensure buildings are safe and operational.
  • Arrange, assemble, move, and deliver furniture, equipment, supplies, and other materials as needed to support classrooms, meetings, programs, and special events.
  • Assist with facility setup, breakdown, and related operational needs.
Safety & Security
  • Monitor facilities for safety and security concerns and respond appropriately to hazards, alarms, unauthorized persons, facility damage, and other immediate operational concerns.
  • Follow established health, safety, sanitation, chemical-handling, and emergency procedures and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Secure buildings, grounds, equipment, and other organizational property as required.
Training, Communication & Team Support
  • Attend required training related to custodial operations, safety, sanitation, equipment, first aid, and other job-related responsibilities.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and staff regarding facility conditions, maintenance needs, work orders, supplies, and safety concerns.
  • Assist other personnel as needed to support efficient facility operations and a safe, effective work environment.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the efficient and effective operation of the facility and organization.
Position Type

This is a full-time position. Typical hours are 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday. However, the Facilities Custodian must be flexible to oversee, initiate and/or complete some tasks after hours and/or on weekends. Minimum travel may be required.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; previous related custodial, facilities, or maintenance experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
  • Knowledge of custodial and industrial cleaning methods, equipment, products, and safety practices.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain custodial, cleaning, and basic maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, safety guidelines, and routine documents.
  • Basic math skills necessary to perform job-related calculations and measurements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also working effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities and interruptions.
  • Ability to identify routine problems, determine appropriate solutions, and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new procedures, equipment, and skills as job requirements and operational needs change.
  • Demonstrated commitment to following established safety practices, procedures, and organizational policies.
