Job summary

The Kentucky Derby Museum is seeking a part-time maintenance associate to help keep the facility clean and ready for daily operations and special events. The role reports to the Director of Facilities and includes setting up rooms, cleaning high-traffic areas, and assisting on special projects.

Expect to open and close the museum and to work variable hours, including Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with more shifts during Derby season. A friendly, team-oriented attitude is essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Stand for long periods, walk stairs, and work in various weather.
• Read, write, and interpret information clearly.
• Friendly, team-oriented attitude and able to pass a background check.
• Valid state driver’s license with clean driving record.

Kentucky Derby Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that sits on the front steps of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is one of the premiere attractions in the Louisville region, celebrating the tradition, history, hospitality and pride of the world-renowned event that is the Kentucky Derby. The Museum welcomes over 230,000 visitors annually; a large percentage of those visitors come from outside of Kentucky, journeying from across the country and the world.

Position Purpose:

The primary purpose for this position is to assist in the general maintenance and cleanliness of the Museum. This position will also assist in setting up for special events at the Kentucky Derby Museum. This position will report to the Director of Facilities. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities:

• Sets up rooms for day, night, and evening events.
• Clean and maintains the facility, including cleaning bathrooms, trash disposal, vacuuming, painting, etc.
• Performs tasks on special projects list.
• Open and closes museum.
• Availability to work both days and evenings based on needs of the Museum.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk up and down stairs, and work in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to read, write, and interpret written information.
• Possess a friendly attitude and willing to work as a part of a team.
• Must be able to sufficiently pass a criminal background check.
• Must have and maintain a valid state-issues driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
• Must be able to handle stress and pressure of high volume of visitors and customer service.

Work Schedule:

• 16 hours per week (open all days of the week). Hours fall primarily on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• All team members are required to work additional hours during Derby season. This includes but is not limited to working shifts on Thurby, Oaks, Derby, and the Sunday of Derby weekend. All team members are also required to work the week of the National FFA conference and Breeder’s Cup (when held in Louisville).

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk, and climb stairs. The employee is also frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. In addition, the employee is required to of twist, turn, stretch, and bend on a frequent basis. This individual will be required to lift and move up to 50lbs. The employee is required to have non-standard workday hours during the spring and fall sessions. All indoor spaces are air-conditioned, although some job duties may take place outside, or in another non-climate-controlled space.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a crowded work area. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to navigate a crowded area and handle a challenging workload.
