Qualifications

  • Previous facilities experience is helpful but not required.
  • Must be able to perform physical work and lift items safely.
  • Capable of lifting up to about 50 pounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance tasks.
  • Experience in theatre or similar environments is a plus.

Facilities Assistant

Position Type: Part‑time. Department: Facilities. Reports To: General Management.

Olney Theatre Center is seeking a dependable, hands‑on Facilities Assistant to support weekend maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and operation of our campus and performance facilities.

Position Summary

The Facilities Assistant will work closely with the General Management team to help ensure that buildings, public spaces, offices, backstage areas, and outdoor areas are clean, safe, functional, and ready for staff, artists, audiences, and community members. This is an active position well suited to someone who enjoys varied work, takes pride in maintaining a welcoming environment, and can work independently while also being a strong team member. This position will require weekend availability, including evenings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform basic repairs and maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs, minor plumbing fixes, furniture adjustments, painting, patching, and other general upkeep.
  • Help prepare facilities for performances, rehearsals, events, rentals, and other activities.
  • Monitor facilities for maintenance or safety concerns and promptly report issues to the Facilities Manager.
  • Assist with deliveries, moving materials, and receiving or relocating supplies and equipment.
  • Help maintain facility tools, equipment, supplies, and storage areas.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and organizational policies.
  • Provide support during evening and weekend performances or special events.
  • Perform other facilities‑related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience in facilities, maintenance, custodial services, building operations, construction, hospitality, or a related field is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to safely lift and move items weighing approximately 50 pounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Basic knowledge of building maintenance, hand tools, painting, plumbing, electrical, or carpentry.
  • Experience working in a theatre, arts organization, school, event venue, hospitality environment, or similar setting.
Physical Requirements

This position requires regular physical activity, including standing and walking for extended periods; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment and supplies; working on ladders or step stools; bending, kneeling, reaching, and working in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Schedule

This is a part‑time position requiring an anticipated commitment of approximately 16–20 hours per week, with regular workdays scheduled Wednesday through Sunday. The schedule is subject to change based on performances, events, facility operations, and seasonal demands. Due to the nature of the position, flexibility is essential, and candidates must be available to work weekends, including evenings, and be on‑call as needed.

Compensation

The Facilities Assistant is a part‑time, non‑exempt position compensated at an hourly rate of $32.50. The position is eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws.
