Job summary

Black Excellence Group in Portland, OR is seeking 2–3 seasonal, part-time Facilitators for the school year (Sept–May). Each facilitator will lead or support BE Group sessions at assigned school sites, 2 days per week, with occasional substitute coverage. In-person work with some prep.

You will build strong, affirming relationships with students, deliver structured activities, and participate in trainings and staff meetings. Prior youth program experience encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Arrive one hour prior to sessions to prepare materials, set the environment, and support transitions; assist with cleanup.
• Build strong, trusting relationships with students and serve as a consistent, affirming adult presence.
• Participate in required staff trainings, team briefings, weekly collaboration zoom meetings, and team gatherings.
• Capture and submit required administrative items, including attendance and data.
• Support communication with school staff and families when assigned to Lead Facilitation duties.

At Black Excellence Group (BE Group), we empower students in Portland through culturally affirming, relationship-centered programming. We support over 500 students from PreK through Middle School with dynamic services designed to foster belonging, confidence, and community.

About the Role

We are hiring 2–3 seasonal, part-time Facilitators to join our Program Team for the school year (Late September–May). We're looking for two Facilitators with committed 2-day availability (any combination of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday), and one Facilitator with flexible availability who can also help cover occasional substitute shifts as program needs arise. Facilitators may serve as Lead Facilitator, Co‑Facilitator, or both, depending on program needs and your experience. Facilitators are often invited to return for future school years.

Schedule & Hours

• Approximately 2-10 hours per week (based on your availability and our program Weekly Cohort Schedule)
• In‑person facilitation at assigned school sites, with limited remote preparation and administrative work
• Weekday availability required
• Facilitators will facilitate their assigned cohorts at a set time twice weekly—on two of these days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. One position includes flexibility to provide substitute coverage as program needs arise.
• Specific facilitation days and group assignments will be determined based on facilitator availability and program needs

Facilitators are culture‑setters and atmosphere‑shifters. They create safe, engaging, and joyful spaces where students build confidence, connection, and skills. Whether leading or supporting a session, Facilitators play a critical role in delivering BE Group’s activities with care, consistency, and student responsiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Lived experience and cultural awareness that support building trust, connection, and affirming relationships with students and community.
• Understanding of emotionally responsive and developmentally appropriate practices.
• At least 2 years of experience working in a school or community‑based youth program setting.
• Experience facilitating groups or supporting group‑based programming.
• Strong relationship‑building and communication skills.
• Self‑discipline to maintain excellence within role and responsibilities.
• Ability to follow structured activity plans while adapting to group dynamics.
• Organized, dependable, and comfortable working in dynamic school environments.

Preferred Experiential Background:

• Experience delivering structured activities or lesson plans in school or community program settings.
• Familiarity with culturally specific education programs and social‑emotional learning (SEL) models.
• Experience communicating with school staff and families.
• Prior experience serving in a Lead Facilitator or instructional role.
