Job summary

Lee Industrial Contracting in Pontiac, MI is seeking an apprentice fabricator/welder to support projects across our fabrications and installations. You will read blueprints, assist senior fabricators, and help maintain a safe, organized job site while handling materials and tools.

The role emphasizes teamwork, self-direction, and strong attention to detail, with opportunities for advancement and comprehensive training within an employee-owned environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience reading blueprints and basic fabrication drawings.
  • Familiarity with welding processes (Arc/Mig/Torch) and shop safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfort working in an industrial jobsite environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support apprentices and fabricators on projects as directed.
  • Follow foreman instructions to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Lead an apprentice on smaller projects when required.
  • Interpret design layouts and blueprints for fabrication.
  • Keep job site clean and organized and manage tools.
  • Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment while maintaining safety.
  • Assist with vehicle fueling and maintenance of department equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Support other apprentices, other fabricators, and sr. fabricators on various projects
  • Follow instructions from foreman and supervisors to ensure tasks are completed efficiently
  • Ability to lead an apprentice on smaller projects
  • Understanding design layouts and blueprints
  • Keep the job site clean and well-organized
  • Handle the loading and unloading of materials, tools, and equipment
  • Ensure attention to detail and follow safety standards
  • Fuel and wash department vehicles
Requirements
  • Shop Arc experience
  • Shop Mig experience
  • Torch Cutting experience
  • Blueprint reading
  • 2-5 years’ experience in the Industrial setting
  • Ability to work effectively with all personality types
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Self-directed and can work independently
  • Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Requirements
  • Shop Tig experience
  • Heat straightening materials
  • AWS weld certifications
  • Chauffeur’s license/ DOT Med card
Equipment And Tool Experience
  • Aerial – Lift Operation – Scissor Lift (Preferred)
  • Forklift Operation – Material handling and loading/unloading
  • Basic operation of trucks and equipment
  • Trailer loading of material
  • Overhead crane certified & qualified (NCCER/NCCCO – Preferred)
  • Fitting table
  • Band saw
  • Pedestal disc grinder (Preferred)

Rigging Requirements
  • Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and materials.
  • Utilize and understand the constraints of chains, synthetic, metal mesh, and wire rope slings.
  • Use & recognize rigging hardware including hooks, shackles, wire rope clips, clamps, eye bolts, softeners and tag lines
  • Identifies common load configurations & positioning
  • Calculate load weights
  • Rigger 2 training – trains on above
Lift Director Qualified (Preferred)
  • Identify the various roles and responsibilities associated with directing a lift, planning a lift, and executing a lift.
  • Discuss proper LHE operating practices as they related to standard and critical load handling activities.
  • Explain the requirements for signaling and communication during load handling activities.
  • Review applicable manufacturer requirements, site requirements, Federal regulations, and applicable standards for rigging equipment.
  • Discuss the procedures for procuring material handling equipment.
  • Distinguish proper vs. improper crane and rigging practices.
  • Select appropriate rigging gear based upon capacity, compatibility, compliance, and load control.
  • Discuss items to be considered before, during, and after a load handling activity.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
  • Must be able to position one-self to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics and tunnels.
  • Must be able to lift and carry or otherwise move up to 50 pounds regularly/occasionally
  • Must be able to respond quickly to auditory alarms, visual signals, or other effective means to communicate hazards
  • Must be able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work in cold/hot environments.
  • Must be able to traverse irregular and steep terrain.
