Job summary

University of Portland seeks a Mechanical Engineering Technician to run the Shiley-Marcos Center fabrication shop, providing machine operations, supervision, and safety oversight for Capstone and research projects.

The role involves training students, maintaining equipment, and coordinating with the Lab Manager on budgets and purchases while upholding rigorous safety standards in a university setting.

Qualifications

• Three to five years of relevant experience including machinist functions and knowledge of CAM/CAD software.
• Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
• Experience in higher education and/or academic machine shop preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate CNC and conventional machines to fabricate parts for student and faculty projects.
• Train and supervise students on proper equipment use and material selection.
• Maintain shop safety, records, and inventory; coordinate with vendors for supplies and maintenance.
• Advise faculty and students on part design, testing, and machining approaches.
• Schedule and manage shop access, setup/breakdown of equipment, and ensure safe work practices.
