How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Fabrication Engineer, you will work to improve Weil-McLain's companywide cost of quality and assure products, service and manufacturing systems meet company expectations with focus in the fabrication function.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

  • Develop and implement Standard Work Instructions
  • Support and expand Lean culture and implementation throughout the plant.
  • Identify and implement safety improvements.
  • Operational Support and Analysis:
  • Provide technical expertise to the Fabrication department for processes such as Turret Press, Stamping Press, Brake Press, Welding, and Powder Paint.
  • Evaluate fabrication issues stemming from product design, process variation, incoming products, or employee issues and help develop systems to reduce or eliminate the probability of the issue re-occurring.
  • Completes time studies and data development for rates, line balancing and cost estimates. Completes workplace improvements, methods, and layouts
New Product Development/Capital Investments
  • Includes the successful crafting of a capital appropriation request (E201) with supporting EVA calculations as well as project management leadership. Processes engineering change requests (ECR’s)
  • Analyse reports and data collected to determine and recommend changes in methods, tooling, and/or equipment to more fully utilize manpower and time to increase productivity, quality, or product value.
What we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)
Required Experience
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Sheet metal Fabrication Knowledge
  • Strong Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced Skills in Microsoft excel required.
  • Lean manufacturing skills and demonstrated the use of the tools.
  • Strong engineering and process conformance knowledge and experience including SWI (standard work), Testing and audit processes, and Engineering change management and support cross-functional teams. Ability to communicate throughout the company at any given level.
  • The individual must also have the ability to lead projects involving several departments to implement solutions to these issues. Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, ensuring completion.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the use of standard mechanical and electrical instruments, functional gauges and test rigs. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and inspection instructions.
  • Knowledge of ISO requirements.
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Proficiency in Design for Manufacturing and Assembly.
  • Ability to learn and navigate different PLM and ERP systems.
  • Establish Routings for new products.
  • Experience with Solid Works and Creo.
  • Requires planning and organizational skills in complex technical functions.
  • Appropriate written and clear verbal communication
  • Ability to work under pressure with multiple priorities.
  • Achieving results using key performance metrics and continuous improvement
  • Problem solving using disciplined problem-solving methods and analytical thinking.
  • Decision making: fact-based, assess appropriate risk
  • Be process based and understand process-based thinking
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in stamping, metal forming, and welding environmentis strongly preferred.
  • Experience in Powder Coat is strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in a sheet metal manufacturing environment Preferred
  • 3+ years experience in Quality Assurance desired
Education & Certifications
  • B.S. Engineering Degree (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical, or equivalent)
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt preferred
  • Up to 25% travel
  • Office working environment and plant floor.
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time to monitor floor operations as part of standards and monitoring plant performance.
  • Moderate risk (Requires special mitigating precautions and/or personal protective equipment or due to potential risk with machinery or chemicals).
