Job summary

GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC is seeking a Battery Controls Engineer to develop and optimize embedded software for the HV battery management system and related components in our Formula 1 hybrid powertrain. You will implement real-time control algorithms, perform MiL/SiL/HiL testing, and collaborate with controls and hardware teams to ensure a cohesive, high-performance system.

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems or related.
• Bachelor’s with 5+ years in embedded software development.
• Expertise in battery management systems and control algorithms.
• Familiarity with HV battery physics and operation.
• Understanding HV bus networks and interlocks.
• Strong C programming and RTOS experience.
• Experience with CAN/CAN FD, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, UART.
• Familiarity with tools, debugging, and version control.
• Knowledge of control theory and embedded hardware interfaces.
• First principles thinking, attention to detail.
• Excellent teamwork and communication.
• Proactive learning in embedded systems.

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and maintain embedded software for HV battery management.
• Implement sensors data acquisition, HALs, comms, and diagnostics.
• Collaborate with controls and hardware teams for system cohesion.
• Perform MiL/SiL/HiL testing and trackside validation.
• Create requirements and unit tests to ensure robust code.
• Ensure software quality and safety standards for Motorsport.
• Maintain documentation and drive continuous improvement.
