Job summary

Applied Systems seeks a Manager, Software Engineering to lead a newly formed data engineering team at the heart of AI-driven initiatives. You will shape data practices across AMS platforms and partner with Product, Architecture, and Engineering leaders to build a data ecosystem from the ground up.

You will coach engineers, drive SQL optimization, data modeling, and cloud data stack on GCP. The role supports remote work with occasional in-person meetings, emphasizing AI-assisted engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Extensive experience with SQL in cloud data warehouses and data modeling.
• Strong leadership and coaching experience in engineering teams.
• Proven ability to drive AI-assisted engineering workflows and cross-functional collaboration.

Position Overview

We're seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to lead a newly formed data engineering team at the center of Applied's most critical, AI-driven initiatives. This team spans Applied's core AMS platforms and powers the data engineering behind key products. You'll have the rare opportunity to help build a team, standardize data engineering best practices, and shape a true data ecosystem across Applied's product portfolio from the ground up — partnering closely with Product, Architecture, and Engineering leaders across the organization.

What You’ll Do

• Lead team of engineers driving data engineering standards and initiatives across Applied's platforms
• Drive high-visibility, cross-functional initiatives in close collaboration with Product, Architecture, and Engineering teams
• Build and standardize data engineering best practices as part of a newly formed team, helping shape the discipline from the ground up
• Provide hands‑on technical guidance in SQL optimization, data modeling, and the GCP data/streaming stack, helping engineers work through cloud technical problem‑solving
• Champion the adoption of AI‑assisted and agentic engineering workflows to drive team‑wide productivity
• Balance hands‑on technical leadership with coaching, goal‑setting, and other people‑management responsibilities

We’re looking for someone who:

• Can work remotely, with occasional in‑person attendance for team meetings, offsites, and leadership events
• Your experience should include some or all of the following:
  • Advanced SQL in cloud data warehousing platforms (BigQuery/Snowflake), including query optimization, partitioning, and data modeling
  • Hands‑on experience with the GCP data and streaming stack: BigQuery, Dataflow/Apache Beam, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL Postgres, and Redis
  • Experience leading and coaching engineering teams, balancing hands‑on technical guidance with people leadership responsibilities
  • Strong software engineering practices, including SDLC, code review, source control, testing, and operations
  • A track record of driving adoption of AI‑assisted or agentic engineering workflows
  • Advanced communication skills, with the ability to distill complex technical concepts for varied audiences
  • Familiarity with Python and Go alongside SQL
  • Familiarity with GKE, Terraform (CDK), and GitLab CI/CD
  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as DataDog
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Our targeted starting base salary in the United States for this position ranges from $115,000 - $185,000. To determine a new team member’s starting pay, we consider a variety of factors, including someone’s depth, breadth, and variety of experience, skills, and responsibilities. Depending on the role, team members may also be eligible to participate in additional compensation plans such as bonus and commission.
