POSITION SUMMARY

The Extended Learning Assistant Director helps oversee Catlin Gabel’s PS-8 out-of-school programs, balancing operational management with a commitment to progressive pedagogy. Alongside the Extended Learning Director, the Assistant Director oversees the PS-8 Extended Day program, enrichment classes, and tutoring program, designing inclusive environments centered on student agency and restorative practices. The Assistant Director also connects directly with students, families and faculty during the day as front desk support in the Lower School providing continuity between the day and extended day programs. This role serves as a vital bridge between families and the school, ensuring all afternoon programming is logistically seamless and deeply aligned with Catlin Gabel's mission.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Extended Day
  • Organize, develop and lead the Extended Day program of activities for students in grades PS-8, for both after school and Day Camps
  • Design a program that effectively supports students and fosters an environment aligned with Catlin Gabel’s progressive pedagogical approach, emphasizing student voice, choice, and agency.
  • Cultivate an inclusive, equitable environment where students in grades PS-8 experience a sense of belonging and agency.
  • Provide student supervision and circulate among programs, offering support to team members.
  • Provide leadership in behavior support through a progressive, restorative framework, guiding students to navigate social conflicts as opportunities for learning rather than disciplinary incidents.
  • Serve as a critical link between home and school, ensuring the after-school experience is reflective of the family-school partnership.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the program and maintain compliance with the State of Oregon Child Care Rules.
  • Assist Extended Learning Director in the recruitment, training, and evaluation of qualified staff, often in collaboration with the BLS Head and BLS Assistant Heads.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, parents, students, school colleagues, the human resources department, facilities personnel, and the business office of the school.
  • Complete all required Human Resources trainings annually (e.g., CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials).
Extended Day Classes
  • Assist the Extended Learning Director to develop and maintain a diverse portfolio of extended day classes designed to appeal to students across a variety of disciplines for grades K-8.
  • Facilitate the onboarding processes for both internal and external Extended Day (ED) class instructors.
  • Keep record of all necessary documentation (background checks, certificates of insurance) for external Extended Day classes.
  • Keep accurate schedules for all internal and external tutors on campus PS-12
  • As needed, provide supervision of tutors and tutoring spaces completing walk-throughs.
  • Maintain necessary documentation in coordination with Human Resources.
School Day Front Desk Support
  • Answer incoming phone calls to the lower school office
  • Assist students with questions and minor medical needs
  • Assist BLS admin team with tasks when available
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In collaboration with the Director of Extended Learning, supervise, lead and mentor Extended Day after school staff.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS
  • This job requires contact with many constituencies: parents, ED staff, school faculty, division administrators, operations staff, students, bus drivers, and state licensing officials.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • BA or BS from an accredited college of university, preferably in education, early childhood, child development, or recreation.
  • At least one year of experience leading a school-age (K-8) children’s program
  • Must be able to qualify at least step 9 in the Oregon Registry.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is primarily performed in a classroom setting with occasional to frequent work leading students off campus activities.

  • Requires ability to traverse campus to accompany and ensure the safety of children
  • This may include moving up and down stairs or hill between facilities multiple times throughout the workday
  • Frequent bending, squatting, stooping and kneeling
  • Occasional lifting of 30-50 pounds
  • This position combines daily active movement in classroom and after school doing lesson preparation, directs attention to children (as necessary), and in stationary position participating collaborative meetings 30%-40% of the time
SCHEDULE

The Extended Learning Asst Director works from 9:30a.m.-6:00 p.m. each school day. 9 hours/week are spent at the Lower School front desk during the school day.
