Job description

Department: Extended Learning | Reports to: Head of Beginning & Lower School | Hiring Pay Range: $26-$30/hour | FTE: 1.0, Full-Time, 10-Month School Year Employee | FLSA: Non-Exempt| EEO: 1.2

THE ROLE

Catlin Gabel School is seeking an Extended Learning Assistant Director who finds joy in working with children and helping create the kind of after-school environment where students feel known, included, and excited to participate. This role combines hands-on program leadership, staff coaching, family partnership, and the daily problem-solving that makes a great extended-day program work.

Working closely with the Extended Learning Director, you will help lead Preschool-Grade 5 Extended Day and Day Camps, support enrichment classes and tutoring, and mentor the staff who work directly with students. You will also spend part of the school day supporting the Lower School front desk, creating a natural connection between students' school-day and after-school experiences. The ideal candidate is warm, highly organized, calm under pressure, and energized by both children and the adults who support them.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Lead Safe, Engaging & Inclusive Extended Day Programming: Help organize and lead Preschool-Grade 5 Extended Day and Day Camps, stay actively engaged with students and staff, support restorative approaches to behavior and conflict, and help ensure safe, compliant program operations.
  • Lead & Develop Extended Learning Staff: Partner with the Extended Learning Director to recruit, onboard, supervise, coach, and support after-school staff and build a positive and student-centered team culture.
  • Coordinate Enrichment, Tutoring & Program Operations: Support K-5 enrichment classes, maintain tutor schedules and documentation, and coordinate the many operational details and cross-school partnerships that keep Extended Learning running smoothly.
  • Build Strong Family & School Connections: Communicate thoughtfully with families and colleagues and provide approximately nine hours per week of Lower School front desk support, helping create continuity between the school day and extended day.
WHO YOU ARE & KEYS TO SUCCESS

To be successful in this role, you will excel in these areas:

  • Student-Centered Program Leader: You genuinely enjoy working with children and know how to create engaging, inclusive environments that balance structure with student voice, choice, and agency.
  • People Leader & Coach: You enjoy helping adults do their best work, set clear expectations, provide useful feedback, and contribute to a healthy team culture.
  • Organized & Reliable: You can keep staffing, schedules, documentation, classes, tutors, family communication, and daily logistics moving without losing track of details.
  • Calm Problem-Solver & Communicator: You bring patience, good judgment, warmth, and clarity when plans change or students, families, and staff need support.
  • Collaborative & Mission-Aligned: You value progressive education, restorative practices, and partnership and enjoy working across a dynamic school community.

We are looking for someone with a bachelor's degree, preferably in education, early childhood, child development, recreation, or a related field, and at least one year of experience leading a school-age children's program. Experience supervising or mentoring staff is strongly preferred. Candidates must be able to qualify at least Step 9 in the Oregon Registry.

WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW

This is a full-time, 10-month position aligned with the school year, with a regular schedule of 9:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Approximately nine hours each week are spent supporting the Lower School front desk during the school day, with the remainder focused primarily on Extended Learning programming and operations.

The role is active and highly student-facing, with regular movement across our 67-acre wooded campus, including stairs and hills.

The School offers a generous benefits package. Please see our website for details: https://www.catlin.edu/about/employment.
