Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Mossville, IL is seeking a Research and Experimental Mechanic to improve process efficiency by assembling, fitting, and adjusting experimental engines ranging from 4.0 L to 340 L.

You will work from Pro-E models, blueprints, and verbal instructions, installing test leads and conducting precise adjustments to engine systems. You will use common hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment, while maintaining safety standards and contributing to design improvements for

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of full-time experience in diesel engine service and repair, or 2-year technical degree in related diesel powers disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Engineering theory and design.
  • Work from Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints and verbal instructions.
  • Assist install builds in various stages on gaseous and diesel engines.
  • Fitting for cooling, air, hydraulic connections, and wiring harnesses.
  • Install test leads, thermocouples, gauges and instrumented components.
  • Perform adjustments on valve train, fuel, cooling and oil systems.
  • Assemble complete units or subassemblies and fabricate piping/wiring as needed.
  • Evaluate reusability of engine hardware during builds.
  • Use precision gauging tools to check assembly accuracy.
  • Plan assembly methods and sequence; install and remove engines from testing cells.
