Job summary

Westchester Veterinary Center & Cat Clinic is a full-service veterinary hospital dedicated to progressive medicine and compassionate care in the Los Angeles area.

As a full-time Veterinary Assistant, you will work with our veterinary team to conduct exams, administer treatments, and support diagnostics, with opportunities to grow clinically.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3+ years of veterinary assistant experience.
  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and surgical assistance required.
  • Computer skills for electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical exams, administer treatments, and assist with in-house lab tests.
  • Triages patients, restrains animals, and maintains safety of patients and staff.
  • Update clients on patient status and explain treatment plans under supervision.
  • Assist with anesthesia monitoring and post-operative recovery.
  • Coordinate team workflow and participate in staff training.

What Success Looks Like


  • Clinical Task Performance: Conducts physical exams, administer treatments, and performs diagnostic procedures, including collecting samples and running in-house lab tests. Assists veterinarians with surgeries, monitors anesthesia, and ensures proper patient recovery under supervision.

  • Patient Care and Handling: Triages patients by gathering medical histories and assessing immediate needs. Handle and restrain animals safely, focusing on minimizing stress and maintaining the well-being of both patients and staff.

  • Communication and Client Interaction: Effectively updates clients on patient status and explains treatment plans under veterinarian direction. Collaborates with the hospital team and fosters a positive, team-oriented environment.

  • Medications and Medical Records Management: Accurately fills prescriptions, administers medications, and documents all treatments, including controlled drug logs, to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Maintains precise and up-to-date patient records, including treatment notes and shift handoff updates.

  • Team Coordination: Collaborates with the hospital team by assisting in training new employees, floating between departments, and contributing to a cohesive work environment. Participate in staff meetings and reviews to ensure the smooth operation of the hospital.



What Makes You a Great Fit


  • Confidence with anesthesia monitoring, dental cleanings, and radiography without supervision besides the attending Veterinarian

  • Exceptional animal handling skills with the ability to work safely with pets of all temperaments

  • Knowledge of diagnostic imaging positioning and laboratory diagnostics

  • Proficiency with venipuncture including IV catheter placement and blood draws

  • Experienced with medication administration (PO, SQ, IM, and IV) and vaccine administration

  • Knowledge of prescription medications to effectively instruct clients with home care instructions

  • Excellent attention to detail in monitoring patients and maintaining medical records

  • Effective communication skills with team members and clients



Education & Experience


  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • 3+ years of experience completing the above details

  • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and assisting in surgical procedures required

  • Computer skills for maintaining electronic medical records

  • Associate degree in veterinary technology or continuing education in veterinary science a plus
