Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton is seeking engineers to support reactor plant fluids engineering for Los Angeles, Ohio, Seawolf, and Virginia class submarines, including Naval Nuclear Power Training Units. You will resolve complex challenges in propulsion plant fluid systems, conduct studies, maintain diagrams and drawings, and interface with NAVSEA, prime contractors, shipyards, and vendors.

The role requires 8+ years of Navy submarine experience, relevant watch-stander qualifications,

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years of US Navy submarine/carrier experience as a qualified nuclear plant operator.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Engineering/Propulsion Plant Watch Supervisor qualified.

  • Engage in system and/or component design, ship alteration upgrades, and life cycle support.
  • Function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks, ensuring overall technical quality.

Job description

D471 Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY) Reactor Plant Fluids Engineering supports mission readiness of LOS ANGELES, OHIO, SEAWOLF, and VIRGINIA Class commissioned submarines by providing engineering technical support for modernization and maintenance of the reactor plant. RPPY engineers also provide engineering support for Naval Nuclear Power Training Units, which include the Moored Training Ships and the S8G Prototype.

This position requires the ability to resolve a wide variety of technical challenges, directly supporting the commissioned fleet and trainers. Technical expertise and knowledge of fluids engineering, submarine arrangements, military and federal specifications, welding, fasteners, material properties, and project management are all beneficial to the position.

This position requires resolution of a wide variety of technical challenges in a fast-paced environment. Technical expertise and knowledge of propulsion plant fluid systems, Military and Federal specifications, welding, fasteners, materials, mechanical equipment, and general methods of manufacturing will be developed by frequently using these skills in performing technical evaluations.

RPPY Reactor Plant Fluids engineers are expected to evaluate and resolve system and component related questions and problems from Naval Shipyards, perform system analysis, perform cost/benefit analysis, perform engineering studies and calculations, resolve obsolescence issues and updated provisioning documents, develop ship alterations, maintain fluid system diagrams and construction drawings, and updated operating instructions. Candidates will also function as a project engineer overseeing all aspects of engineering tasks including overall technical quality, working in a team environment, maintaining schedules, awareness of budgets, and interfacing with other engineering and design disciplines. Selected candidates will be expected to effectively communicate with NAVSEA, prime contractors, Naval shipyards, and equipment vendors.

Required Qualifications

Preferred
  • Associate/Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear/Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • Experience working in a private or Naval shipyard.
  • Experience as a Nuclear Mechanical Division Leading Petty Officer/Chief Petty Officer.
  • Experience as an instructor at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command or at a Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit.
  • Squadron Engineering experience
