Job description

Job Description

Shipyard Field Engineering is looking for dynamic individuals to work at the Newport News Shipbuilding Reactor Plant Contractors' Office (RPCO). This is a growth and development position that offers significant autonomy. Positions are available in Integrated Plant Testing and Refueling Services. This is a hands‑on position where you can play a significant role in integrating the efforts of multiple stakeholders to ensure the success of naval nuclear ship maintenance and construction. The Test Engineer position requires 8-10 months of in‑house technical qualification, and the Reactor Servicing Engineer position requires approximately 6 months of in‑house technical qualification (less with prior applicable experience). Upon successful completion of the technical training at either the Knolls or Bettis laboratory the candidate will be relocated to Newport News. RPCO Field Engineers function as independent company representatives at nuclear‑capable shipyards and Naval Bases. They conduct highly visible work with a broad spectrum of responsibility, including technical support, consultation, and oversight through the performance of installation, testing, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of complex equipment and nuclear systems. The position requires engagement in a shipboard industrial environment meeting directly with ship's force, senior shipyard leadership, and Naval Reactors. Field engineers are proactive in identifying and preventing problems to avoid impacts to cost and ship delivery schedules. They provide technical direction for problem resolution and oversee compliance with contractual requirements. Our engineers research, evaluate, and recommend new products and equipment upgrades as necessary. RPCO field engineers function independently to ensure the best interests of the Company. Because this is a NNL career development opportunity, it is strongly recommended that upon completion of a 3‑5 year assignment in the field that the candidate return to one of the laboratory locations to further their career as leaders within NNL.
