General Summary

• This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC who have greater than 12 months of experience. The nurse will be competent in the required skills and knowledge and fully participate in unit governance. They will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. The nurse independently provides and coordinates care within a clinical specialty, serves as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team, and demonstrates the full range of nursing practice. They are accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes, to peers for advancing group practice, and to the nurse manager for work performance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Successful completion of probation, current mandatory classes/training.
• Maryland RN licensure or eligibility through Compact agreements.
• Maintain 10 contact hours of education annually.
• Membership in a professional organization.
• Recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to lead others effectively, such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource, and work well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficiency with computer systems for managing patient information.
• Knowledge of growth and development principles, with the ability to assess patient data based on age-specific needs.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Patient Safety

• Ensure patient safety in job functions and participate in safety initiatives.
• Take action to correct risks, report adverse events and near misses, and communicate risks to responsible personnel.
