Job summary

WSP in Herndon, VA is seeking a structural engineer with 3–5 years of post‑degree experience to support design and analysis for building and infrastructure projects. You will collect data from sites, surveys, and GIS, perform structural assessments, and prepare reports and drawings.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from site surveys, blueprints, GIS data, and other matrices for project development and construction.
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and assist with research and inspections of site conditions to ensure conformance with standards and permits.
  • Incorporate advanced modeling techniques to support safe and functional design for end-users and transportation systems.
  • Work individually or in cross-functional teams to layout installations, establish elevations, select materials, and estimate costs and quantities.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance to secure structural soundness against loads and environmental effects.
  • Prepare data visualizations, tables, charts, and 2D/3D illustrations for data interpretation and reporting.
  • Maintain quality control in measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting; assist in scoping small-to-medium projects.
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations to address design or construction issues.

This Opportunity

Provides technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, improvement, and/or construction of building and infrastructure projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include assisting with the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures or structural elements, such as buildings, bridges, roadways, and mechanical structures. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding material, installations, and construction specifications. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and assist with conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, building, infrastructure, and transportation channels to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
  • Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with structural engineering design standards.
  • Work as an individual or as part of a cross‑functional team of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installations, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, selecting appropriate materials to ensure durability, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on securing structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence.
  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small‑to‑medium‑sized projects.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
  • Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid‑level risk mitigation activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, local and privately funded improvement and development projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post‑education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work‑related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge with process and concepts for sustainability, and reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances/greenhouse gas.
  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non‑engineering audience.
  • Effective self‑leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline‑specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS).
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
