Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory seeks an experienced Mechanical Engineer to provide turbomachinery design support and advance vendor development for steam turbines and generators.

The role requires applying engineering fundamentals across structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis, with collaboration with naval shipyards and equipment vendors. You will help build turbomachinery expertise within the New Design group; U.S. citizenship is required, and detailed compensation is provided in the posting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field with 9+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Master's degree in a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Doctorate in a related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; or
  • Currently a Principal Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Job Description

The NNL Main Machinery group is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer. This role involves providing crucial turbomachinery design support as well as advancing the development of component vendors and technologies. The ideal candidate should have experience in the design, analysis, or testing of steam turbines or generators and demonstrate a willingness to learn about a range of associated engineering fields. They will play a key role in building and sustaining turbomachinery expertise within NNL. This position requires applying principles-based engineering and sound judgment to evaluate a range of design aspects for steam turbines and related hardware. This role entails working within NNL's New Design business area and significant collaboration with naval nuclear shipyards and steam turbine design vendors. Technical responsibilities will span various mechanical engineering disciplines, including structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or
  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience; or
  • Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science field and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience; or

Pay Range

$106,200.00 - $166,000.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets.
