Job summary

WSP in Overland Park, KS is seeking an Experienced Field Control Specialist to support its Field Control Services (FCS) team on diverse projects. You’ll develop proficiency in instrumentation, PLC, DCS, HMI, and testing across industrial and utility environments.

Qualifications

• One to three years of college, technical or trade school study, military technical training, apprenticeship, internship, co-op experience, or related work experience in instrumentation/controls.
• Foundational knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control systems, with willingness to develop proficiency in PLC-, DCS-, HMI-, and standalone controller-based systems.
• Basic knowledge of field devices including pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters; switches; valves; positioners; actuators.
• Ability to read mechanical/electrical drawings including P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and schematics.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam; able to learn specialized controls software.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to prepare clear field documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites.
• Commitment to safety and compliance training, including OSHA 30-hour.
• Ability to pass drug/alcohol and background screenings.

Responsibilities

• Perform field control system services under supervision for utility, institutional, industrial, boiler, and balance-of-plant systems.
• Assist with instrumentation installation verification, calibration, loop checks, I/O checkout, testing, and startup.
• Assist with checkout/testing of PLC, DCS, HMI, burner management, combustion control, and standalone systems.
• Read and apply P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and control schematics; review data sheets and procedures.
• Collect field data and prepare work summaries, calibration records, test documentation, and project deliverables.
• Follow safety requirements, identify hazards, and communicate unsafe conditions.
• Interact professionally with clients, plant personnel, vendors, and team members.
• Coordinate with project lead on scope, schedule, and budget; communicate technical issues promptly.
• Support proposals, estimates, client relationships, and identification of follow-on work.
• Participate in technical training and develop knowledge for increasingly independent field assignments.
• Travel to client facilities and support field assignments, outages, startups, or alternate shifts as required.

Your Impact

• Perform assigned field control system services under the direction of experienced FCS personnel for utility, institutional, industrial, boiler, chilled water, and balance-of-plant systems.
• Assist with instrumentation installation verification, calibration, loop checks, input/output checkout, functional testing, startup, troubleshooting, and control-loop tuning.
• Assist with the checkout and testing of programmable logic controller (PLC), distributed control system (DCS), human-machine interface (HMI), burner management, combustion control, and standalone control systems.
• Read and apply P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, control schematics, instrument data sheets, installation details, and applicable test procedures.
• Collect field data and prepare accurate work summaries, calibration records, test documentation, redlines, software files, and other project deliverables in accordance with FCS standards.
• Follow WSP and client safety requirements, recognize job-site hazards, and promptly communicate unsafe conditions or changes in assigned work.
• Interact professionally with clients, plant personnel, vendors, contractors, and WSP team members.
• Understand assigned scope, schedule, and budget expectations; coordinate daily work with the project lead; and promptly communicate technical issues, delays, or changed conditions.
• Support proposals, estimates, client relationships, and identification of follow-on work by providing accurate field information and technical input when requested.
• Participate in technical training, share lessons learned, and develop the knowledge needed to perform progressively more independent field assignments.
• Travel to client facilities and support short- or extended-duration field assignments, outages, startups, overtime, weekends, or alternate shifts as required by project schedules.
  

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• One to three years of college, technical or trade school study, military technical training, apprenticeship, internship, co-op experience, or related work experience in instrumentation/controls.
• Foundational knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control systems, with the ability and willingness to develop proficiency in PLC-, DCS-, HMI-, and standalone controller-based systems.
• Basic knowledge of common field devices, including pressure, temperature, level, and flow transmitters; switches; control valves; positioners; and actuators.
• Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings, including P&IDs, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, installation details, and schematics
• Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude related to the installation, operation, testing, calibration, and maintenance of control system components.
• Ability to use common test equipment and hand tools safely, or the demonstrated ability to learn their use under supervision.
• Proficiency with standard computer applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Bluebeam, with the ability to learn specialized controls software.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to prepare clear, accurate field documentation.
• Ability to manage multiple assigned tasks, work effectively with different personalities, follow direction, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to travel to client sites and meet project-specific travel and scheduling requirements.
• Ability to work safely in active utility, industrial, and central plant environments and to comply with required personal protective equipment and site-access requirements.
• Ability to successfully complete required safety and compliance training, including OSHA 30-hour training.
• Ability to satisfy applicable WSP and client drug and alcohol testing, background screening, and site-access requirements.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’sdegree or higher in a technical discipline.
• Experience performing instrument calibration, loop checks, input/output checkout, electrical testing, or equipment troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with boiler, combustion, burner management, chilled water, process control, or balance-of-plant systems.
• Exposure to one or more PLC, DCS, HMI, or building automation platforms.
• OSHA 30-hour training, instrumentation certification, or related technical credentials.
