Job summary

The EFDA must hold an active Indiana Radiology License and EFDA certification per Indiana regulations, with experience in a general dental office.

Qualifications

  • Dentrix or similar dental practice management software (Preferred).

  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
  • Reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for dental treatment and escort to the operatory.
  • Assist the doctor during dental procedures with efficiency and professionalism.
  • Anticipate provider needs and maintain smooth clinical flow.
  • Chart clinical notes accurately and in real time during treatment.
  • Educate patients on oral health, treatment plans, and post-procedure care.
  • Stock and prepare operatories with instruments and materials.
  • Maintain infection control and sterilization protocols (CDC/OSHA).
  • Support scheduling and patient flow to minimize wait times.
  • Collaborate with doctors, hygienists, and admin team.

Position Summary

The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) plays a critical clinical role, supporting high-quality patient care through advanced assisting functions and exceptional chairside support. In addition to performing all duties of a Dental Assistant, the EFDA is trained and authorized to complete expanded clinical functions. This position contributes directly to clinical efficiency, patient experience, and practice growth by supporting providers before, during, and after dental procedures while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and care delivery.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support & Patient Care
  • Prepare patients for dental treatment by escorting them to the operatory, ensuring comfort, and reviewing required documentation.
  • Assist the doctor during dental procedures with efficiency, accuracy, and professionalism.
  • Anticipate provider needs and maintain a smooth clinical flow throughout procedures.
  • Chart clinical notes accurately and in real time during treatment.
  • Educate patients on oral health, treatment plans, and post-procedure care instructions.
Expanded Functions (EFDA Duties)
  • Perform expanded clinical functions as permitted by state law, including but not limited to:
  • Placing restorations
  • Applying sealants
  • Coronal polishing (if certified)
  • Applying topical anesthetics
  • Take diagnostic radiographs efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure all expanded functions are performed under appropriate supervision and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Operatory & Infection Control
  • Stock and prepare operatories with instruments and materials prior to each procedure.
  • Maintain strict adherence to CDC and OSHA infection control and sterilization protocols.
  • Clean, disinfect, and reset operatories after each patient.
  • Monitor clinical areas throughout the day to ensure cleanliness, organization, and compliance.
Scheduling & Workflow Awareness
  • Remain aware of daily schedules and proactively adjust to changes, additions, or emergencies.
  • Support efficient patient flow to maximize provider productivity and minimize patient wait times.
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up and accepted treatment as directed.
Team Collaboration & Professional Conduct
  • Work collaboratively with doctors, hygienists, and administrative team members to support a positive and professional team culture.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Uphold the practice's values, policies, and professional standards at all times.
Qualifications

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Full-time, onsite position within a dental practice.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and assisting chairside for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move dental equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Must comply with all safety, infection control, and PPE requirements.
