Job summary

Dental Team of West Delray is seeking an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) for a full-time position in Delray Beach, Florida. The EFDA will support clinicians with expanded clinical functions, assist chairside during procedures, and ensure high standards of safety and patient care.

Responsibilities include preparing patients, assisting the doctor, maintaining infection control, documenting notes, and educating patients on care plans.

Qualifications

  • Active Florida Radiology License required.
  • EFDA training and certification per Florida regulations required.
  • Chairside experience in a general dental practice preferred.
  • Experience with Dentrix or similar software preferred.
  • Strong communication and patient safety focus.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support & Patient Care: prepare patients, escort to operatory, review documentation, assist doctor with procedures, maintain smooth clinical flow, chart notes in real time, educate patients on oral health and post-procedure care.
  • Expanded Functions (EFDA Duties): perform functions like placing restorations, applying sealants, coronal polishing, topical anesthetics, take radiographs under supervision.
  • Operatory & Infection Control: stock operatories, maintain CDC/OSHA protocols, disinfect and reset rooms, monitor cleanliness.
  • Scheduling & Workflow: manage daily schedules, adjust for emergencies, support patient flow and follow-up scheduling.
  • Team Collaboration & Professional Conduct: work with doctors and staff, participate in meetings and trainings, uphold standards and policies.

Position Summary

The Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) plays a critical clinical role, supporting high-quality patient care through advanced assisting functions and exceptional chairside support. In addition to performing all duties of a Dental Assistant, the EFDA is trained and authorized to complete expanded clinical functions. This position contributes directly to clinical efficiency, patient experience, and practice growth by supporting providers before, during, and after dental procedures while maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and care delivery.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support & Patient Care
  • Prepare patients for dental treatment by escorting them to the operatory, ensuring comfort, and reviewing required documentation.
  • Assist the doctor during dental procedures with efficiency, accuracy, and professionalism.
  • Anticipate provider needs and maintain a smooth clinical flow throughout procedures.
  • Chart clinical notes accurately and in real time during treatment.
  • Educate patients on oral health, treatment plans, and post-procedure care instructions.
Expanded Functions (EFDA Duties)
  • Perform expanded clinical functions as permitted by state law, including but not limited to:
  • Placing restorations
  • Applying sealants
  • Coronal polishing (if certified)
  • Applying topical anesthetics
  • Take diagnostic radiographs efficiently and accurately.
  • Ensure all expanded functions are performed under appropriate supervision and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Operatory & Infection Control
  • Stock and prepare operatories with instruments and materials prior to each procedure.
  • Maintain strict adherence to CDC and OSHA infection control and sterilization protocols.
  • Clean, disinfect, and reset operatories after each patient.
  • Monitor clinical areas throughout the day to ensure cleanliness, organization, and compliance.
Scheduling & Workflow Awareness
  • Remain aware of daily schedules and proactively adjust to changes, additions, or emergencies.
  • Support efficient patient flow to maximize provider productivity and minimize patient wait times.
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up and accepted treatment as directed.
Team Collaboration & Professional Conduct
  • Work collaboratively with doctors, hygienists, and administrative team members to support a positive and professional team culture.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Uphold the practice’s values, policies, and professional standards at all times.
Qualifications
  • Active Florida Radiology License (Required)
  • EFDA training and certification consistent with Florida regulations (Required)
  • Chairside experience in a general dental practice (Preferred)
  • Experience working in a professional office setting (Required)
  • Experience with Dentrix or similar dental practice management software (Preferred)
  • Coronal Polishing Certification (Encouraged)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Full-time, onsite position within a dental practice.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and assisting chairside for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move dental equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Must comply with all safety, infection control, and PPE requirements.
