Qualifications

  • Fit preliminary crowns, create temporary restorations and place temporary materials.
  • Fabricate temporary crowns and adjust/cement as needed.
  • Place and remove matrix retainers for restorations.
  • Place resin and amalgam restorations and finish/polish.
  • Sit chair side to pass instruments and support direct patient care.
  • Ensure sterilization of instruments and organize them for procedures.

Indiana University School of Dentistry is the only medical center in the state educating professionals to provide oral health care for people with disabilities or medically complex conditions. The Special Needs Clinic at IU School of Dentistry is committed to providing high-quality oral care to people with disabilities and training the next generation of dentists to provide appropriate and compassionate care to them.

  • Take impressions and bite registrations.
  • Take, develop and mount x-rays. Instruct students on taking x-rays.
  • Fit preliminary crowns for adjustments, create custom temporary restorations, and place temporary restorative material in teeth.
  • Make and fabricate temporary crown and adjust and cement.
  • Place and remove matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations.
  • Place resin and amalgam restorations. Finish and polish restorations and adjust patient bite.
  • Perform expanded dental assistant functions and demonstrate correct procedures to students.
  • Sit chair side to pass instruments and support direct patient care as indicated by procedure.
  • Confirm that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organize them for procedures and/or surgery.
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
Work Experience
Required
  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting training program with 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty; OR
  • 2 years of dental assisting experience with completion of an accredited dental assisting training program plus 1 year of expanded dental assisting experience or assisting in a dental specialty
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
  • Indiana X-Ray license upon date of hire
  • Expanded Functions Dental Assisting license upon date of hire
  • Dental Assistant certification upon date of hire
  • Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) upon date of hire

This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients.
