Job summary

New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) seeks an SVP/Director of the Mortgage Insurance Fund to lead SONYMA’s mortgage insurance portfolio and reserve investments. Reports to the Commissioner/CEO, directing a small team and coordinating with insured lenders, staff, and the Board.

The role focuses on policy development, risk management, budget preparation, and maintaining strong Moody’s rating while guiding strategic outcomes for affordable housing finance across New York State.

Qualifications

• 10 years of specialized experience in mortgage insurance or related field.
• Familiarity with underwriting multifamily and single-family mortgage loans.
• Proven track record establishing credit risk policies and risk mitigation systems.
• Excellent analytical, management and communication skills are essential.
• Ability to foster collaboration between different stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversee underwriting of mortgage insurance applications and work-outs of distressed loans.
• Manage professional staff and liaise with insured mortgagors or servicers.
• Present to-be insured loans to SONYMA’s Board and review MIF commitments.
• Prepare annual budget requests and monitor MIF reserves and excess balances.
• Maintain Moody’s Aa1 rating and chair the Agency’s credit committee.
