Job summary

The Clinton Police Department seeks an experienced Chief of Police to lead and manage the agency with a focus on ethical, constitutional policing and community engagement. The successful candidate will oversee administrative and operational functions, guide budgeting and policy development, and coordinate law enforcement services with the City Administrator.

Qualifying candidates will have a strong background in police administration, relevant degrees, and executive leadership training.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Police Science, Management, or closely related field.
• At least five years of progressively responsible police administration experience, including sworn law enforcement background.
• Preferred executive command experience or comparable leadership in a similar agency.
• Completion of at least one executive leadership program (e.g., FBI National Academy, SNIP, etc.).
• Must meet Iowa peace officer certification requirements within 1 year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, administration, and supervision of the Clinton Police Department.
• Oversee personnel, planning, budgeting, policy development, and coordination of services.
• Exercise independent judgment within applicable laws and city policies; respond to critical incidents and major emergencies.
