  • Experience across clinical phases; registrational studies and regulatory submissions strongly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in ophthalmology and/or neuroscience, ideally including retinal disease.
  • Strong understanding of clinical trial design, GCP, safety reporting, biostatistics, and regulatory expectations.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders in a fast biotech environment.

Job description

Ray Therapeutics mission is to restore vision to people with retinal degenerations. RayTx is using a novel bioengineered optogenetic protein optimized for human vision delivered by AAV to restore visual function in a mutation agnostic approach and without the need for light enhancing eyewear. The company is developing its lead candidate RTx-015 in retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative retinal disease with significant unmet medical need as well as a pipeline to treat both rare and large market indications.

Executive Medical Director, Clinical Development, Berkeley, CA , Hybrid

Reporting into the CMO, the Executive Medical Director, Clinical Development will provide strategic and operational medical leadership for a portfolio of early- and/or later-stage clinical development franchise assets. This role will shape clinical development strategy, lead protocol and study execution, interpret emerging data, and represent the company with investigators, regulators, partners, and the scientific community.

The ideal candidate is a physician with deep therapeutic-area related expertise, strong drug-development experience, and the ability to translate scientific opportunities into differentiated clinical programs.

  • Capitalize on your strong clinical judgment, scientific rigor, and problem-solving skills establishing a clear, differentiated clinical strategy; advance high-quality studies; build trusted relationships with external experts and regulators; and strengthen the organization’s ability to make timely, rigorous, patient-focused development decisions.
  • Leverage your cross functional team leadership experience, and demonstrated ability to contribute to study design, study conduct, and emerging data interpretation as you significantly contribute to the design and execution of clinical studies, driving forward projects through clinical trials and CMC.
  • Design and oversee clinical development plans, protocols, informed-consent documents, investigator brochures, and clinical study reports.
  • Provide medical oversight for clinical trials, including eligibility criteria, safety monitoring, data review, endpoint strategy, and benefit-risk assessment.
  • Partner closely with Clinical Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Drug Safety, Commercial, and Program Management and other functions to deliver high-quality studies on time and within budget.
  • Interpret and communicate clinical, safety, biomarker, imaging, and efficacy data to support evidence-based development decisions.
  • Build relationships with key opinion leaders, investigators, advisory boards, patient advocacy groups, and external collaborators.
  • Support regulatory interactions, including briefing documents, agency meetings, responses to information requests, and preparation for health-authority inspections.
  • Contribute to scientific communications, including abstracts, presentations, and meetings.
  • Mentor and develop clinical team members and foster an accountable, patient-centered, collaborative culture.
Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or PharmD required; Ophthalmology, Retina or Neuroscience specialty experience is preferred
  • 7-10 years of relevant biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or drug-development experience, including substantial industry clinical-development leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience advancing programs across clinical phases; experience with registrational studies and regulatory submissions strongly preferred.
  • Deep expertise in ophthalmology and/or neuroscience, ideally including retinal disease, neuro-ophthalmology, or related therapeutic areas.
  • Strong understanding of clinical trial design, GCP, safety reporting, biostatistics, and regulatory expectations.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence senior stakeholders in a fast-moving biotech environment.
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule requiring 3 days per week in the office.
Compensation Range and Benefits:

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $375,000 - $425,000 based on the candidate's professional experience level. The final salary offered for this position may take into account a number of factors including, but not limited to skills, education, and experience. Ray Therapeutics also offers annual performance-based bonus, annual equity awards and a comprehensive benefits package.
