Job summary

Potomac Highlands United Way in Cumberland, MD seeks an Executive Director to provide strategic leadership and drive community impact across Allegany, Garrett, Hampshire, and Mineral counties. The role partners with the board to grow resources, communicate PHUW’s mission, and ensure strong governance and operations.

The Executive Director will lead fundraising, stakeholder engagement, and program oversight while traveling regularly in the four-county service area.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated senior leadership in a nonprofit, public, philanthropic, or business setting with responsibility for strategy, people, budgets, and results.
• A record of fundraising or resource development and building lasting relationships across sectors.
• Ability to communicate a compelling vision, lead changes, analyze financial information and organizational risk, and work effectively with a governing board.
• Experience in convening partners and working with communities of varied sizes and needs; ability to travel regularly throughout the four-county service area.
• Must have an understanding of Microsoft Office, Social Media, and Telephone.
• Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or substantial relevant experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership to strengthen PHUW as a regional convener and driver of community impact.
• Develop and implement fundraising strategies across workplaces, individuals, and partnerships.
• Engage the board and staff in planning, governance, and priority setting; monitor progress and risk.
• Oversee staff, programs, finances, and operations ensuring effective stewardship and accountability.
• Represent PHUW in public forums and media; communicate mission, results, and opportunities clearly.
