Job description

Executive Director of Camp Daisy and Harry Stein

Camp Daisy and Harry Stein

Description

The Opportunity:
For more than 50 years, Camp Daisy and Harry Stein has been a place where young people discover who they are, make lifelong friends, and experience the joy of Jewish life. Nestled among the pines of Prescott, Arizona, Camp Stein is more than a summer camp. It is a Jewish community, a family, and a place that generations of Jewish children have come to call home.
Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in Scottsdale, Arizona, seeks an experienced, visionary, and deeply relational Executive Director to lead Camp Daisy and Harry Stein into its next chapter.
This is an opportunity to steward something deeply loved while imagining what comes next.
The Executive Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for Camp Stein, with responsibility for strategic growth, financial sustainability, organizational excellence, fundraising and donor and community relations, and excellence of the camp experience. The successful candidate will understand that the strength of Camp Stein is ultimately found in its people: campers who feel known and welcomed, staff who are inspired to give their best, families who trust the community with their children, alumni who remain connected, and a Jewish community that sees camp as an essential part of its future.

The Executive Director will:

  • Lead the full-time Camp Team, including the Director of Camp and Assistant Director.
  • Work closely with the CBI Board of Directors, the Camp Committee, and camp lay leadership.
  • Serve as a passionate ambassador for Camp Stein across the Southwest and the broader Jewish camping and communal landscape.
  • Ensure that Camp Stein's growth and future remain rooted in its mission, Jewish values, relationship with Congregation Beth Israel, and commitment to creating a welcoming community where every young person can belong and thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Growth

The Executive Director will provide the vision, leadership, and follow-through necessary to build a strong and sustainable future for Camp Stein.

  • Develop and articulate a strategic vision for the camp's growth and sustainability.
  • Establish measurable goals and accountability structures; regularly assess enrollment, financial performance, profitability, and opportunities for growth.
  • Translate strategic priorities into coordinated action across recruitment, fundraising, marketing, programming, and business development.
  • Foster a culture of creativity and collaboration while maintaining and respecting history and tradition.
Camper Recruitment and Enrollment

Growing the Camp Stein community will be a central priority of the Executive Director.

  • Be an expert at ‘telling the story’ of Camp Stein. Share the vision and tradition of camp with prospective participants in new communities and geographic markets identified across the southwest.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and data-informed recruitment strategy and establish enrollment goals and measurable benchmarks.
  • Develop strategies to attract new campers, convert prospective families, and improve camper retention.
  • Build relationships with families throughout their journey from first contact through their camper's years at Stein.
Development, Fundraising, and Alumni Engagement

The Executive Director will strengthen the camp's financial sustainability and philanthropic support.

  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget with senior leadership and the Budget & Finance Committee. Monitor performance, analyze variances, provide financial reporting, and recommend adjustments to support fiscal responsibility and strategic priorities.
  • Develop and implement a fundraising strategy to strengthen the camp's philanthropic support.
  • Build authentic, lasting relationships with donors, prospective donors, alumni families, and community partners.
  • Identify new revenue opportunities and partnerships to support camp’s future.
  • Articulate the impact of Camp Stein in ways that inspire people to invest in our mission.
Relationships and Community Partnerships

Camp Stein serves as a home for Jewish young people from across the Southwest. The Executive Director will be a visible and enthusiastic ambassador for that community.

  • Manage and strengthen relationships with organizations such as the Foundation for Jewish Camp, JCamp 180, Association of Independent Jewish Camps, PJ Library, and other relevant partners.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to local synagogues, Jewish communal organizations, clergy, educators, and youth-serving organizations.
  • Cultivate partnerships that support camper recruitment, programming, fundraising, and organizational growth.
  • Represent Camp Stein with warmth, enthusiasm, professionalism, and a deep belief in the identity-building experience of Jewish camp.
Marketing & Recruitment

The Executive Director will ensure that Camp Stein's story is shared clearly, creatively, and authentically.

  • Develop a coordinated marketing strategy aligned with our core values.
  • Provide strategic oversight of social media and digital communications
  • Oversee open houses, prospective family events, family camp, New Camper Weekend, and camper reunion initiatives.
  • Ensure that Camp Stein's communications and ‘brand’ capture our vibrance, history, and values.
Retreat & Facility Rental Business

Camp Stein offers opportunities to serve the broader community beyond the summer season, and building up this program will be critical to our ongoing sustainability.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the camp's retreat and facility rental business.
  • Assess opportunities for growth and increased profitability
  • Develop strategies to expand retreat and rental revenue and cultivate relationships with organizations and groups that may utilize the camp facility.
Organizational Leadership

Camp Stein is an integral part of Congregation Beth Israel.

  • Evaluate and evolve the organizational structure to ensure the right people, skills, and leadership are in place to effectively advance the organization’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Maintain a strong, collaborative partnership with Congregation Beth Israel’s Board of Directors and Senior Staff, ensuring alignment between the camp's strategic priorities and the congregation's mission, values, and broader vision.
  • Work closely with CBI clergy and senior leadership to strengthen the relationship between camp and congregation.
Why This Role Matters

The Executive Director will bring focus, energy, and strategic leadership to Camp Daisy and Harry Stein's most important priorities: building a strong and sustainable future in partnership with Congregation Beth Israel, increasing enrollment, strengthening financial sustainability, deepening community relationships, and enhancing the camp experience. The Executive Director will bring focus, energy, and strategic vision to our Jewish home in the pines. The opportunity is both practical and profound: to help ensure that Camp Daisy and Harry Stein continues to be a summer of fun, a lifetime of memories— both for our current campers, and generations of campers to come.
