Job description

The Executive Director of Maintenance Operations provides enterprise-wide leadership, strategic direction, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance for maintenance operations across multiple regional hospitals in the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system. This role is responsible for driving standardization, reliability, safety, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across multiple hospitals and community sites while ensuring regulatory readiness and effective stewardship of physical assets and infrastructure. This role ensures that each facility operates at optimal efficiency, safety, and reliability while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. They will lead a multidisciplinary team of directors, managers, and technicians and collaborate with hospital leadership, construction, engineering, and clinical departments to support continuous, system-wide process improvement in facilities maintenance. The role will operate within a matrixed organizational structure, with both direct and indirect reporting relationships across BILH. Responsible for oversight of maintenance operations supporting multiple acute care hospitals, ambulatory facilities, and community sites across the BILH system.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Planning
  • Develop and implement a system-wide maintenance strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Identify and assist in managing capital and operational budgets for maintenance operations across all BILH hospitals.
  • Establish performance benchmarks, KPIs, and reporting metrics to monitor and optimize maintenance outcomes.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on long-term facility planning, sustainability, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Develop and implement an asset management strategy
  • Identify continuous improvement initiatives
  • Evaluate and standardize workforce planning
  • Establish and monitor system-wide maintenance performance standards, productivity metrics, and service level expectations.
  • Ensure consistency in maintenance operations, staffing models, and service delivery practices across facilities.
Operational Oversight
  • Monitor the maintenance operations for assigned hospitals within the BILH system, ensuring 24/7 readiness of critical systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life safety, medical gas, etc.).
  • Lead standardization of maintenance procedures, preventive maintenance programs, and work order systems across the system.
  • Partner with Director of Vendor Services to manage vendors, contract negotiations, and procurement related to maintenance services and equipment.
  • Lead emergency preparedness efforts related to infrastructure failure, disaster recovery, and utility interruption.
  • Lead the implementation and successful adoption of system-wide maintenance standards and initiatives across BILH
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
  • Monitor and audit facility conditions to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety.
  • Work closely with hospital engineering and environmental services teams to support accreditation and inspection readiness.
  • Ensure ongoing survey readiness and compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements including TJC, CMS, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead corrective action planning and compliance remediation efforts resulting from regulatory inspections and audits.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team including directors, facility managers, engineers, and skilled trades staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and customer service.
  • Implement training programs and succession planning to ensure skilled workforce continuity.
  • Lead organizational change management efforts associated with implementation of enterprise maintenance programs, standards, and technologies.
  • Provide leadership and direction to site-based directors and managers while promoting consistency in operational performance across the system.
  • Develop leadership talent and succession plans to build organizational capability and workforce sustainability
Minimum Qualifications
Education

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for the educational requirement.

Licensure, Certification & Registration

Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) preferred.

Experience

Pay Range

$150,000.00 USD - $225,000.00 USD The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
