Job description

We’re building a relationship-oriented bank for the modern world. We need talented, passionate professionals who are dedicated to doing what’s right for our clients. Our team members have what they need to make a meaningful impact and are truly valued for who they are and what they contribute. To learn more about CIBC, please visit CIBC.com

What You’ll Be Doing

The Executive Director, Balance Sheet Optimization will play a leading role in enabling growth across CIBC’s Corporate & Investment Banking businesses by helping transaction teams manage balance sheet, funding, risk and capital constraints while maintaining the Bank’s risk appetite. As part of a lean and evolving Balance Sheet Optimization team, the successful candidate should expect to operate across levels. In addition to senior advisory and execution responsibilities, the role will initially include hands‑on data collection, recurring reporting, and presentation preparation while processes and reporting capabilities are being automated.

How You’ll Succeed

Solutions and Execution Partner with Corporate Banking and Investment Banking teams to identify transaction, client, and sector constraints and assess opportunities to optimize balance sheet, capital, funding and risk. Develop and recommend executable solutions—including loan sales and participations, forward flow arrangements, NPI, CDS, SRT, funding trades and asset pledges—based on economics, RWA impact, business returns and risk appetite. Coordinate front‑office and control partners to structure and execute transactions, secure approvals, complete documentation and resolve execution issues. Build repeatable execution frameworks and represent Balance Sheet Optimization in relevant governance forums.

Portfolio and Returns Management Maintain a forward view of the transaction pipeline, portfolio roll‑off, business plans, concentrations and capacity required to support growth. Participate in new‑deal reviews, including deal approval committee, and drive follow‑up. Partner with business leaders to improve lower‑return clients and transactions through stronger economics, reduced resource use or capacity redeployment. Translate recurring constraints and concentrations into an annual optimization plan with measurable balance sheet, capital and funding objectives.

Reporting and Capability Development Deliver concise management reporting on pipeline and portfolio constraints, optimization opportunities, transaction status, realized benefits and key decisions. Improve tools, reporting, policies and execution standards as manual processes transition to scalable automation.

Who You Are

The successful candidate will combine strong credit judgment, transaction execution capability and commercial partnership skills, with the ability to translate complex balance sheet constraints into practical solutions. Typically 10+ years of relevant experience in corporate banking, investment banking, credit, loan distribution, structuring, portfolio management, or capital management; experience level will be calibrated to Director or Executive Director. MBA, CFA, or formal credit trading a plus. Strong understanding of corporate credit, financial modeling, transaction structuring, portfolio risk, RWA, capital, balance sheet and funding considerations. Experience evaluating and executing nonpayment insurance, credit‑risk transfer, loan distribution, participation, hedging or related optimization solutions. Ability to assess solution economics, model costs and benefits, and communicate implications for returns and resource utilization. Commercially minded and solutions‑oriented, with sound judgment on balancing client priorities, business objectives and risk appetite. Strong cross functional communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex issues into clear recommendations and decision materials, resolve competing priorities and drive accountability. Highly collaborative, proactive and organized, with the ability to operate independently in a lean, evolving team. Willingness and ability to personally perform detailed data gathering, reconciliation, quality control, spreadsheet analysis and recurring reporting when required, without relying on dedicated junior support. Comfort operating at both strategic and hands‑on levels, from shaping priorities and advising senior stakeholders to preparing underlying analysis and advancing individual transactions through execution. Experience supporting technological advancement, driving AI usage, and developing management dashboards.
