Executive Director Job Description
Position Title: Executive Director
Classification: Management / Executive
Reports To: Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, with the Board President serving as the primary liaison
Position Summary:
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive of the Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce and is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and performance of the organization.
Working within the strategic direction and policies established by the Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads the Chamber’s staff, operations, finances, membership strategy, revenue development, programs, advocacy, communications, and community partnerships.
The Executive Director serves as the Chamber’s principal spokesperson and represents the organization with members, business leaders, elected officials, governmental agencies, educational institutions, economic-development organizations, community partners, media, and other stakeholders.
The position requires strategic leadership, sound business judgment, strong relationship-building skills, financial and operational management, and the ability to translate organizational priorities into measurable results.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1.Organizational Leadership and Management
- Provide overall leadership and management of Chamber operations, programs, personnel, and resources.
- Develop and implement annual organizational priorities, goals, work plans, and performance measures aligned with Board-approved strategic direction.
- Recruit, supervise, develop, evaluate, and retain professional staff.
- Foster a positive, accountable, collaborative, and service-oriented organizational culture.
- Ensure appropriate administrative, human-resource, technology, financial, and operational systems are maintained.
- Identify opportunities to improve organizational effectiveness, member value, and long-term sustainability.
2.Membership Development and Engagement
- Lead strategies to retain existing members and achieve sustainable membership growth.
- Develop strong relationships with current and prospective members, including major employers, small businesses, entrepreneurs, and community partners.
- Regularly assess member needs and ensure Chamber programs and services provide meaningful value.
- Promote member participation in Chamber events, programs, committees, advocacy efforts, and leadership opportunities.
- Ensure effective member communications and customer service.
3.Revenue Development and Financial Management
- Develop and administer the Chamber’s annual operating and capital budgets for Board approval.
- Monitor revenues, expenditures, cash flow, financial trends, and overall financial performance.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and appropriate internal controls.
- Develop sustainable revenue through membership, sponsorships, partnerships, events, grants, and other appropriate sources.
- Personally cultivate significant membership, sponsorship, and partnership opportunities.
- Provide the Board with regular financial analysis, projections, and recommendations.
4.Advocacy, Communications, and Community Leadership
- Serve as the Chamber’s principal spokesperson and ambassador.
- Maintain professional and nonpartisan relationships with elected officials, governmental leaders, business leaders, education partners, economic-development organizations, and other community stakeholders.
- Monitor and communicate legislative, regulatory, economic-development, workforce, and other issues affecting Chamber members.
- Advocate for Board-approved positions and the interests of the Bullitt County business community.
- Represent the Chamber at meetings, events, public forums, and regional or statewide initiatives.
- Strengthen the Chamber’s visibility, credibility, and reputation throughout Bullitt County and the Louisville metropolitan region.
5.Board and Governance Support
- Serve as the primary executive resource and strategic advisor to the Board of Directors.
- Provide timely, accurate information and recommendations necessary for effective Board decision-making and oversight.
- Work with the Board President to prepare Board and Executive Committee agendas and supporting materials.
- Implement Board-approved policies, priorities, and strategic initiatives.
- Support Board development, engagement, committee activities, and volunteer leadership.
- Maintain clear distinction between Board governance responsibilities and the Executive Director’s responsibility for day‑to‑day management.
Required Qualifications
- Significant progressively responsible leadership experience, preferably including responsibility for organizational strategy, personnel, budgets, revenue generation, operations, or external relationships.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, developing, and evaluating professional staff.
- Strong financial and business acumen, including budgeting and financial analysis.
- Demonstrated success in business development, membership development, sponsorships, fundraising, partnerships, sales, or comparable revenue‑generating activities.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and public‑speaking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational, strategic‑planning, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.
- High degree of integrity, professionalism, discretion, accountability, and sound judgment.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, marketing, communications, organizational leadership, or a related field. Significant relevant senior leadership experience may be considered in lieu of a specific degree.
- Senior leadership experience in a chamber of commerce, business association, economic‑development organization, nonprofit, business, government relations, workforce‑development organization, or other complex stakeholder‑driven environment.
- Experience working with a governing Board of Directors.
- Knowledge of public policy, economic development, workforce development, or business advocacy.
- Familiarity with Bullitt County, the Louisville metropolitan region, and/or the Kentucky business environment.
- Institute for Organization Management (IOM), Certified Chamber Executive (CCE), Certified Association Executive (CAE), or comparable professional credential.

Work Schedule and Condition s:
This is a full‑time executive position requiring a highly visible presence throughout Bullitt County and the surrounding region.
The position requires a flexible schedule and regular participation in early‑morning and evening meetings, Chamber events, community activities, and occasional weekend responsibilities. Periodic regional and statewide travel may be required.
Regular office, meeting, event, and community‑based work is expected.
Compensation:
Salary and benefits are commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications and will be established in accordance with the Chamber’s approved compensation and personnel policies.
Performance Evaluation:
The Executive Director is evaluated by the Board of Directors based on the effective execution of Board‑approved priorities and measurable organizational results, including membership growth and retention, financial performance, revenue development, member engagement, community and business relationships, advocacy effectiveness, staff leadership, organizational performance, and progress toward strategic goals.
