Overview
An established human services organization serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is seeking an Executive Director to lead organizational modernization, strengthen financial sustainability, and expand community presence. This is a highly visible leadership role responsible for guiding the agency's operations, funding strategy, and stakeholder relationships while preserving its mission and values.
What you'll do
- Evaluate operational and administrative processes to identify inefficiencies and modernize workflows, policies, and internal controls
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and encourage employees to identify problems and recommend solutions
- Identify opportunities to automate or digitize administrative processes and reduce manual, paper-based systems
- Evaluate and implement technology solutions to improve communication, scheduling, documentation, financial management, data collection, reporting, and service delivery
- Ensure technology investments are practical, secure, accessible, and cost-effective
- Develop implementation plans, training, and employee support for new systems and processes
- Establish operational and program metrics and use data to guide decision-making
- Benchmark organizational practices against other nonprofit, human services, and IDD organizations
- Monitor emerging technology, including responsible use of artificial intelligence and automation, while protecting sensitive information
- Develop and execute a strategy to diversify and strengthen the organization's funding base
- Identify new federal, state, local, foundation, corporate, and private funding opportunities
- Research and pursue grants aligned with mission and strategic priorities
- Develop relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, community organizations, and individual donors
- Strengthen individual giving and donor-development efforts
- Explore sponsorships, planned giving, major gifts, and fundraising campaigns
- Develop funding proposals communicating organizational needs, outcomes, and impact
- Work with the Board to strengthen involvement in fundraising and resource development
- Monitor changes in Medicaid, government funding, and reimbursement structures affecting the organization
- Develop and execute a proactive community outreach and engagement strategy
- Build relationships with individuals, families, businesses, healthcare organizations, educational institutions, government agencies, and community partners
- Increase awareness of programs and services among individuals with IDD, families, and referral sources
- Develop referral networks and partnerships connecting individuals and families with needed resources
- Represent the agency at community events, professional organizations, and public forums
- Develop partnerships with local employers for employment, volunteer, and community-inclusion opportunities
- Communicate organizational successes and impact through digital and traditional channels
- Serve as spokesperson and advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families
- Encourage innovation, calculated risk-taking, and adaptability in organizational practices
- Seek input from employees, individuals served, families, and Board members before major changes
- Translate ideas into practical implementation plans with clear ownership and timelines
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and/or 5 years' experience in the Developmentally Disabled field
- Positive track record leading a performance and outcome-based organization and staff
- Experience developing and operationalizing strategies that advanced organizational growth
- Good record of interaction with family members and volunteers
- Past success working with a board of directors and cultivating relationships with board members
- Successful leadership, administrative, coaching, and relationship management experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
- Strong financial knowledge
- Strong marketing, public relations, and team-building skills across diverse stakeholders and cultures
- Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
- Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, and mission-driven self-motivation
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with community, state, and federal services and systems serving individuals with developmental disabilities
- Current CPR, First Aid, and Physical Intervention Alternatives certification, or the ability to obtain certification
