Job summary

The City of Hutchinson seeks an experienced City Attorney to provide comprehensive legal guidance to the City Manager, City Council, and departments. This executive role oversees municipal legal services and staff, ensuring policy compliance and effective governance.

The lawyer will manage outside counsel, draft and review ordinances, and advise on land use, contracts, labor, and risk management. Strong leadership and Kansas licensure are required.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school.
• Six years of broad professional legal experience in municipal preferred.
• Experience in legal research, drafting, courtroom/trial work, and municipal governance.
• Supervisory or management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and representation on all aspects of municipal law, including land use, zoning, contracts, employment, open government, and risk management.
• Draft, review, and negotiate ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and deeds.
• Attend and advise at City Council meetings and public hearings.
• Coordinate and manage outside legal counsel and litigation matters.
• Maintain and update the municipal code and support employee relations and risk programs.
• Monitor legislation and ensure compliance with laws and ordinances.
